It is unlikely to affect the MOT, unless emissions equipment has been mapped out, and even then it is highly unlikely to be detected at the MOT test as things currently stand.
You'd have to notify your insurance company, most aren't bothered by a sensible increase in power, but you must notify them or your insurance might be invalidated.
I think you should ask specific questions about the remap before proceeding further, such as who did it, why, what has it achieved etc.

What is the nature of the remapping? Just more power, or to disable anti pollution systems?

If its the former insurers aren't too bad, and Mr MOT is unlikely to be worried.

If its the latter thats a bit trickier. Declare it to an insurer and they won't touch you. You're unlikely to get caught but if youre unlucky youll lose the van and face a massive fine. But the biggest worry is that this is being looked at for the next round of MOT test changes due later in the decade, so could end up not being able to get a ticket further down the line.

So you need to know exactly what sort of map it has, by whom, and have proof of that, such as an invoice.

I'd say unless you know with confidence what remapping was done and what the motivations were for doing it, I'd give it a miss - they'll be plenty of other vans out there.

It is possible it was owned by someone who knew what they were doing and applied a reputable map to give sensible results but, in the absence of more information, I'm afraid it's more likely that it was either some tinkering boy racer type looking to push the power or someone who had EGR/DPF issues they were trying to get around - either way would be a risk for a second hand van purchase.

Exactly this^^^^^For me, this sums up the whole “modding” issue perfectly. Spend a fortune on tweaks/bling/maps and you actually devalue the van. As long as you’re happy that the money spent is for your personal enjoyment (it’s your money after all), you need to be prepared for the fact that you’re actually devaluing the base van when it comes to resale. Back to the OP, personally I wouldn’t touch a van that’s been buggered about with, jog on until you find an honest one with nothing to hide.

As others have already said, I’d avoid anything that’s been remapped. Problems could easily occur later down the line at your expense. If remapping is something you’d like to do to your own van, I’d buy a solid well looked after van initially and then remap it yourself at a reputable garage.

Also what van are you looking at? I have a 6.1 150bhp DSG fully converted, and I don’t feel the need whatsoever to have any more power.
