Rear Suspension Lift Spacers

Hi All

I bought some lift spacers a while ago and I've just asked a garage to fit them for me and they wouldn't do it as they didn't believe they were safe.

I was a little surprised by this and was wondering if anyone here has them fitted, whats your thoughts, good upgrade and has anyone heard any horror stories?????

The reason I bought them was because of the weight in the back dropping the suspension by 2 to 3 inches.

These are the ones I bought T5/T6 Suspension Swamper Lift Kit (Silver) - Rear Only | PCD Parts

Cheers

My word, a garage with scruples!

If youre looking to correct the drop cause by a regular heavy payload of a camper conversion then you want these...

You'll want these to go with them as the springs use thicker material and are a poor fit on the originals and may squeak...

That not only restores the ride heaght, but it gives you the full range of suspension travel and the result is transformative - your van won't feel like its wagging its tail everywhere and the steering geometry will be restored, reducing the annoying understeer. Some folk use T32 rear springs, but results can be mixed depending on the coloured-dot spring code. For what little it costs its worth doing it proper, like.

Any garage can fit them, or its a straightforward DIY job if you've a suitable jack and stands...although not perhaps in December!

Looks more like the front needs lowered, sits nice at the back.

THQ do a rear spacer, maybe ask them what they think.

Thanks Sasquatch

The garage is in Bulgaria......really nice young lad and father set up in Plovdiv!

They also suggested what you said to get levelling springs.

I just had the shocks done on the rear and that has made a massive difference to the tail wagging issue so maybe I'll just go the whole hog and get the springs done as well.

Those extra rubbers you linked are they a better quality than the ones provided in the spring kit or the same?

Cheers

The spring kit comes with the top set of rubbers, but you need the separate bottom set as well (in the link I posted) as the spring doesnt fit the VW rubbers very well.

How to the spacers actually fit? What holds them in place?
I'm not 100% sure but I believe they go on top of the spring so they touch the chassis, so I'm guessing that its just the pressure of the spring against the chassis....nothing else came with the spacers and nothing as far as I know is recommended.........but I guess that how the springs are kept in place anyway?

There was a guy on here who has a suspension company on here, is it CRS? I tsalked to him years ago about getting a lift kit and I remember him saying they preferred to use the spacers instead of new springs because the ones fitted would be calibrated/aligned already...something like that

The problem there is that spring rate rises with compression, so with spacers you're running a partially compressed spring with a consequently higher spring rate for the same ride height as OE, which is "crude" to put it politely.

Yes, heavier springs have a heavier rate from the off, but because theyre not already heavily compressed their spring rate doesnt rise as steeply as theyre compressed. Upshot, the ride isn't as crashy.

I've had springs replaced in rear on my 2017 T6 camper conversion. I supplied and garage replaced with Vogtland Sport Lowering Springs and it ran fine for couple of months. Now the Driver side rear appears to have collapsed and the tyre is rubbing on arch. I've taken it back to the garage, they have said cannot find anything springs are ok but the driver side tyre is making contact with inside of arch. The garage then said they recommend replacing shocks?? I didn't think shocks will make any difference so I went to get van back. He then said the rubber is split on the top of the spring. IM guessing this will make a difference to height? They are decent lads who have looked after my van and wifes car last few years so not double checking their work but need a quick solution.

I work for myself an use van for commuting so this is not a sustainable situation. IM based in Widnes if anyone can point me in right direction any garages near by taht could help

If the springs are new , its unlikely that they have sagged But if the van is running 20 inch wheels and its suddenly started to rub it could be that the shock has gone and now the suspension is moving much further and easier so the tyre might touch . Important to note that the lowering spring in a Camper will go down 70 to 80 mm , Way too low for standard shocks ( this might be the issue )
