Reading the Dipstick

Sorry to revive this thread, but stupid question incoming regardless. After inserting a fully wiped off dipstick, which is the correct reading after engine off for 5 minutes? Blue or red? (I'm assuming red, but I find this stick much harder to read than all the other vehicles I've ever owned.)

IMO 5 minutes after shutdown isn’t going to allow an accurate dip, probably a minimum of 15 minutes is better.

Ah, OK, I read elsewhere 5 minutes after was the VW recommendation. I did actually take another one 90 minutes after and there's not a lot in it (rotated and scaled, but they're very similar readings regardless:

Top pic is after 90 minutes, bottom is the same as the above after 5 minutes. So what do we reckon? 1/3rd?

90 mins without professional drawn lines:

Thanks, question answered! Any time after 5-10 minutes and where the oil blobs out. Bring back the flat stick with the holes in it.

The red line is what I would read. I wouldnt consider the blue line as it isn't "full" of oil.

It's in the middle of the two..

As the dipstick sits at an angle on the sump.

So the horizontal oil level is the middle point between the upper and lower way marks.

Add above check the following morning with a cold engine.

So another question - when taking ones oil level does one push the dipstick all the way in until it clicks or does one place the dipstick until it is resting on the top of the dipstick tube.

Just asking for a friend :whistle:

push in till the click - or you will get a false LOW reading.
