Forced regen sorted it - Driven to far on too little fuel.

So basically there is no issues doing it for a few hundred miles but close to 1000 miles is a step to far ha

The VW assist guy said that its very common as there is a major design fault - the DPF light doesnt come on if under 1/4 tank. So essentially it doesnt warn you it needs one.

As you say lesson learnt and not damaged caused.
