Popping noise from engine. 2019 199bhp

So my van has recently developed this odd popping noise from the engine. Sounds a bit like air escaping, and hopefully you can hear it in the attached audio, above the usual diesel clatter.

It’s a 2019 199bhp if that helps, with about 37k on it.

Any ideas?

Well, not exactly a bit, rather T6 diesel behaviour - every now and then.

T6. Engine hot. Starts when vehicle has reached standstill. Engine on tick-over - 830 RPM. Stop/start doesn't shut off the engine.

Sound clip attached - a "hiccup" regularly every 1.5 seconds. Can last up to two minutes. Recording made outside. Best heard on right side of vehicle (standing by right front wheel). Can be heard in cabin, too.

Thank you! So having quickly flicked through the relevant posts in that quiz, I couldn’t quite determine if it’s something I should be worrying about or not, or what the resolution was (if there was one). Thoughts?

I'm highly confident it's just an engine's self-diagnostic routine which runs periodically when conditions are favourable Most likely the ECU measures degree of EGR cooler blockage - similarly as the actual built-in test (below). I would say perfectly normal.

So it seems - inevitable P0401.

Well, visited a VW garage to be tested - the van had accumulated 30 events in ECU's memory since July 2021 (since 20 months now). Eventually managed turn on the emission light at event number 31 - thus had a priviledge to have EGR flow tested. The result - pending - the ODIS went to an unending loop without a concluding result.

Meanwhile, I think I have reproduced the EGR flow test using VCDS. However, I don't have any reference value to estimate the degree of EGR cooler blockage. Neither did ODIS tell the reference value (should have told but the computer...
