Pop-top gel coat maintenance

Wish I watched this video before I tried using that Polytrol on my black Skyline roof last year .I was putting it on with a cloth and was rubbing in like Polish which helped but didn't realise I just need to brush it on and leave it to dry. Today my cherry Red T6 is at a detailing company poshing the van but as told me that he's finding it hard to polish the roof back to as new , also now recommending to have a protective coat done on it for another £550 .
I use polytrol on mine with a washing up sponge to apply it like a sponge brush. I build/restore guitars and basses and use the same method to apply wiping varnish.

Touch wood, mine still comes up really well. I think I got to it in time to arrest any degradation, and a wipe of polytol in spring and autumn still does the job.

If it should get a bite out of hand ill have it blown over in satin black - relatively inexpensive if I prep it myself, and sating makes local repairs easier if required further on down the line.

Someone suggested using U-Pol type bed liner, which sounds intriguing.
