Parking Assist loosing it's marbles!

Hi gang,

I'm experiencing a very strange Park Assist behaviour from my 2022 plate T6.1 and I wondered if anyone could shed light or has experienced same?

When Parallel Parking with Park Assist (either side) the van confidently begins proceedings yet totally overshoots the space and mounts me about 2 feet onto the curb.

This happens absolutely consistently now and has been doing so for a few weeks.

Don't get me wrong, it perfectly parks me in the space, absolutely dead centre between the two cars... But also parks on most of the pavement! I look like I've having the biggest senior moment of all time!

All the parking sensors seem to working correctly when I'm maneuvering normally. Sensors are clean and unobstructed. Haven't had a bash and, till very recently, the Park Assist was faultless.

Whilst I don't often use the Park Assist function (because I can actually park my van) it's more the concern that's it's maybe symptomatic of a different fault elsewhere.

Any thoughts, similar experiences or advice would be massively appreciated.

Cheers all

Are the cars either side on the pavement ?

The van only sees other vehicles and does not recognise small kerbs and pavements

Yes cars on either side of the space, the space itself has plenty room for the Van to fit in so no issues there. Yet the Parking Assist throws the van into a very sharp angle consequently mounting the curb.

Initially I thought it was confusing the space for a Bay Parking space (as can occasionally happen) but this is definitely not the case as it happily mounts the curb then straightens out into (what it thinks) is a beautifully parked position

Does it do it parking both sides, to the right and to the left?

Yes exactly that - the issue is the same on each side regardless. The way it takes the steep angle is same and the end result (laughable curbing) is also the same.

The fact that it happens consistently on both sides and isn't an intermittent error I'm guessing means it's not down to an individual malfunctioning proximity sensor?

Have you changed anything that would require the sensors to need recalibrating? - wheel size, ride height, bumper change etc.

That's the weirdest thing - absolutely nothing has been adjusted or changed... At least not recently. The van rides on 19 inch aftermarket alloys and has been dropped 50mm. But all those mods were done over 2 years ago and there's been no issues whatsoever since those changes

Hi, did you get this sorted? Mines the same.

Hi, did you get this sorted? Mines the same.
At the moment It's still completely off its Rocker - weirdly however the Bay Parking Feature is working as it should. Because of this - my thoughts are probably a Software issue.

I spoke to a local independent workshop who have access to the VW Software. They're gonna book me in and make sure everything is updated (I don't trust the VW Stealership one bit)

How long has yours been playing up?

I’ve just got the van. It was my dad’s 2021 reg and he never used the park assist so I’m guessing the software needs updating. It is a high line but been cosmetically modified by Leighton vans so I’m not sure of the bigger wheels, different bumpers etc may have affected it. It doesn’t want to parallel or bay park properly. Goes up the kerb parallel parking and struggles to reverse without gettting within an inch of the other car. I’m going to book it in at midland vw and see what they think. I’ll keep you posted … cheers, Dave

Awesome mate. That would be great. Good luck, hope you get it sorted 👍🏻

No joy from midland VW. They say it might be because it’s lowered. I’ve also contacted Leighton vans who did the mods and they say that they never have any troubles with park assist. I’ve been advised to get the adas calibration done but it seems unlikely to me as all the sensors work spot on until I try and use park assist.

Exactly the same as me that.
Did VW Check that you had the latest Software running?
My Van is lowered 50mm and Park Assist was working no problem for just under 3 years. All of a sudden it starts playing up, exactly the same as you. Racking my brains trying to figure out what's behind the problem

It’s driving me mad now!! I rang another VAG specialist yesterday He advised I get the adas done. I’ve taken it today to have it done and it’s already calibrated perfectly with no faults logged so they couldn’t do anything. The chap took it out and tried to park in several scenarios but it kept doing the same to him. I rang Leighton vans who carried out all the mods and they said they hadn’t had any trouble with the park assist on other vans they’ve done. My only option now is to contact VW and book it in there. I’ll keep you posted… can you let me know if you get yours sorted?

Hey mate. Did you have any luck with VW?
My local Dealership is utterly useless - they basically said over the phone (without even looking at the van) that any/all of my aftermarket mods (including suspension, wheels and audio system additions) could/are causing the park assist issue 😂

When I pointed out that my mods have been on for several years and the Park Assist issue has only just started the fella on the phone said "Well... That's the risk you take with aftermarket mods mate"

I'm taking it to a independent VW Specialist next week to have the software updated, see if that makes any difference. Needless to say I trust them significantly more than the VW lot

No luck atm!! I’ve had an issue with the heater stuck on hot and the soft close on the powered tailgate has stopped working since. I’ve been away for a few weeks and it’s going to a vag specialist next week. They are going to look at the self park at the same time. Trouble is there’s so few vans with it fitted, no one even the vw specialists seem to know much about it. Keep me posted, as will I you. cheers

Could be a long shot, but I read somewhere that if the wheel alignment is out, it can stuff up the park assist.
