P2209 and P220A NOx Error code advice

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a bit of advice with my T6 Highline 150 DSG (55k miles). I’ve just had the cambelt and alternator freewheel pulley replaced, and about 100 miles later I started getting the following fault codes (read with a £20 Amazon code reader):

  • NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit – Range issue
  • P220A manufacturer control
I can clear the codes, but they come back at random intervals—anywhere from 10 to 50 miles.

Before I go ahead and buy a replacement NOx sensor, is there anything else I should check first?

VW have quoted me £749 for a genuine sensor, but I’ve seen others ranging from £150–£200 at EuroCarParts/GSF and a Lucas option for about £399. I’ve also read that some aftermarket sensors don’t work properly on the T6. Does anyone know if a genuine sensor is essential, or is there a reliable aftermarket brand that people have had success with?

Finally, the van drives exactly the same as before the warning light appeared. Is it safe to leave it for a while, or could ignoring it cause any engine or emissions system damage before the MOT?

Any advice or experience would be much appreciated!

Mark

Perhaps go back to the garage that did the work done and advise the current fault that has happened straight after the work they did.
It could be that they have disturbed some wiring, or not re-connected something.

Alas, I did the cam belt and the pulley. I only undid two connectors on the air box and the large earth lead on the engine mount and they are all ok. I have also changed the leisure batteries, but I would have thought these wouldn't affect the NOx sensor. but willing to be told differently.

Firstly - what model year the van is - please post 11 leftmost digits of the VIN - something like WV1ZZZ7HZKH0
Asking because not all T6 are equipped with NOx sensor 1 - many of then have only the sensor 2 (after DPF/NOx catalyst)

  • NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit – Range issue
  • P220A manufacturer control
P2209 - Sense Circuit for Heater for NOx Sensor 1 Bank 1 - Implausible Signal
P220A - NOx Sensor 1 Bank 1 Voltage Supply - Electrical Malfunction

I would start troubleshooting from NOx Sensor 1 Bank 1 Voltage Supply - does the sensor get the power? Although I'm not exactly sure if the fault refers to sensor's internall supply or vehicle supply to the sensor controller.

Well, the sensor is actually powered only when it has reached it's operating temperature. Unless something obvious a proper diagnostic tool would be more than helpful to monitor sensor's power supply etc.

I would expect no harm - the engine probably just reverts to a kind of default program of AdBlue injection (as it does always while waiting the sensor to warm up to operating temperature).

Hi mmi,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It is much appreciated. The Van is a 2017 and started as a panel Van.

The 11 leftmost digits are WV1ZZZ7HZHX I think the engine is a CXHA.

I have tried a friend's OBDLink MX+, and the results are the same. However, it does provide more information. Even after clearing the codes, the light stays off, and they still show as pending. I have attached some screenshots that might help?

Thankl you again

Then it's just one NOx sensor.
Note: the snippet in my post #5 was from an engine with two NOx sensors but the principle is the same. Just need to look for "NOx sensor after SCR catalytic converter: supply voltage" etc.

Sounds like the fault is permanently on - the engine probably needs a few driving cycles to be absolutely sure before turning on dash light.
