NOx Sensor Replacement – €4,500 Quote Just After Warranty Expiry 😡

Hi all,Just wanted to share my experience and see if anyone else has faced something similar.

My T6.1 2023 4motion threw a fault code for the NOx sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 1). The dealer diagnosed it and quoted a staggering €4,500 for the repair. Apparently, the sensor itself is around €750, but they claim the engine needs to be removed to access it, which drives up labor costs massively.

To make things worse, my van is just 12 days out of warranty. I’m still shocked by the scale of the quote and the unwillingness of the dealer to do this under warranty.

Has anyone here had to replace this sensor?
  • Is it true the engine needs to come out? Where is this thing located?
  • Any tips on alternative approaches or trusted independents who’ve done this without full engine removal?
Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences. This feels like a design flaw more than a wear-and-tear issue as there is a newer revision of the sensor available. (04L 907 807 BT)

Cheers,Michiel

Is it true the engine needs to come out?
According to workshop manual:

Biturbo vehicles:
– Remove emission control module.
– Drain coolant
– Remove front exhaust pipe
– Remove subframe together with steering rack
– Remove front engine mounting
– Remove rear engine support
– Disconnect connectors, pull off coolant hoses, etc., etc.

Vehicles with all-wheel drive:
– Remove propshaft
– Remove bevel box

– Use engine and gearbox jack to raise engine support at front so that engine tips backwards.
– Remove emission control module
– Unscrew NOx sender -G295
Installing
Assemble in reverse order of dismantling.

Interestingly for single turbo engines
– Unscrew NOx sender -G295- ⇒ Item 3 (page 492) .
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal
Specified torque 52 Nm

The dealer diagnosed it and quoted a staggering €4,500 for the repair.
Does the dealer guarantee that the repair will fix the issue - in case not will they reimburse the fare 🤔 ?

Where is this thing located?
Google for document SSP722 -
"The 2.0 l TDI engine with close-coupled emission control (MAR) in the T6.1 2021"
in the document search for G295

Have you got a second quote and diagnosis from an independent specialist?

That’s a load of poop!
I got mine out with a big spanner (24mm from memory) and a LOT of heat, cherry red did the trick
It is an absolute t**t of a job, but it can be done.

Mine is a CXEB 4mo

I’d definitely get a couple of specialist quotes

For what it's worth, I have just replaced the NOx sensor on my 2018, 204 BHP, CXEB, 4Motion.
It's a doodle to do really! Sensor is very easily accessible and with a bit of heat, a modified 22mm ring-spanner (cut open to get over the cable) and a pipe extension on the other end it also came out no problem. It's a bit fiddly to disconnect the control module from behind the heatshield, but once you have dropped the prop-shaft bearing you can peel it away enough to get access. Whole thing can be done in an hour.
It might all look a bit different in you 6.1 model, and apparently some models have two sensors - one in front and one behind the AdBlue injection box. I only have one behind it.

So , have you fixed your nox sensor, or still saving up for it?
Was the dealer/VW sympathetic as to the expiry of the warranty?

If you have a full dealer history it might be worth asking VW for a goodwill contribution.
