outdoor revolution movelite t4e pc canopy - anyone fitted it direct to the van?

Hi, we recently bought a T6 T28 camper and have inherited a T4 lowline awning as part of the deal.
We erected the awning yesterday for the 1st time (don't laugh!), and i have a question regarding the figure-8 van attachment and corresponding drop panels - do the awnings come in different lengths as there appears to be quite a length of spare attachment tape at either end of the van (ours is a short wheelbase, looks like it would fit a LWB better)?
Also, the figure-8 plastic attachment clip is shown on the 'how to erect video' being slid along the van, we needed to push ours onto the rail from the side - could this be a buildup of dirt on the rail, or are there certain peculiarities for different van manufacturers?
