Oil pump belt

How often should the oil pump (wet) belt be changed on the 2.0 diesel. Is it with every timing belt change and are they prone to failure?

Never known one being changed. It's not listed in the service schedules either.

I have just learned today about these engines having a wet belt I thought that was just Ford I’m on almost 110k won’t sleep at night now

Should the worst happen I gather if the engine is stopped soon enough it won’t be fatal as the timing won’t be affected?

Yeah, assuming your oil pressure light is working you should be fine. Do they ever break the belts?? They aren't under a tremendous pressure unlike a timing belt.

It's funny these wet belts on fords, I have yet to see any issues from them. Granted we don't really deal with vans, so I wonder if diesel vans are more common due to regens and lack of oil changes causing the belts to become contaminated. We see the eco boost petrols in the workshop daily and no issues.

Now, Peugeot/vauxhall wet belts we do see issues. Busy doing a wet belt on a Peugeot just now including cleaning the oil pick up of debris! Strangely they use a chain to drive the oil pump.

The oil pump drive carries a very low load compared to a camtrain wet belt, thus the belt has a far easier time.

I saw a repair video recently and was surprised to find out our engines have wet belts. The repair was for leaky front main seal and they changed the wet belt while it was in bits.

I never knew nor have read about any issues in my 5 years of ownership so hopefully positive sign!

The Transit wet cam belt is a lot narrower than a normal diesel dry belt, so will be under significantly more stress. This may be a reason that so many fail, and the Transporter wet oil pump belt doesn't fail.

Reminds me of the early VW CR diesels that had a hex drive to the oil pump that regularly failed, causing instant loss of oil pressure and engine damage if not turned off quickly. It was a few pence to make no doubt, like a cut down piece of allen key.

I say bring back the 1.9PD!!

I'll be getting my oil pump belt done every second timing belt unless, as you suggest, the crank seal has to come out anyway.

This is even more worrying. Every second?
How often do you need to change a timing belt?
On the cars I had with a timing belt, I don't remember having changed it more than once, usually at 160k km/ 100k mi.

Im a low mileage user, will do my timing belt at 7 years, which will be about 12,000 miles. VW GB dealers give all sorts of difrerent answers, and VW in Germany are now suggesting the timing belt is a lifetime fit. I'll go my own way on that for the peace of mind.

The oil pump belt is intended to last the life of the vehicle. In most cases vans work hard for a living and are dead inside 8-10 years, which the belt easily manages.

However, us leisure users make our vans last far, far longer than the average van buyer, and were starting to see the odd 5.1 with belt failure.

You can help things along by using the correct VW 507 spec oil, which was also designed to be kinder to the belt, and by replacing the belt at high mileages or advancing years.

But the belt is fairly chunky and manages a very light load indeed compared to a timjng belt, and problems other than in old age are thankfully very rare indeed. Its not really something to worry unduly over.
