Oil leak? Anyone know what this might be?

Hi folks, does anyone have any idea what might be causing the oil coverage here?

Its not dripping but the oil is somewhat wet.

Thanks.

I have zero mechanical knowledge 🫤

What does this mean in simple terms?

Rough cost to fix?

The oil is on the driver side. Van has 55K mileage.

Unsure on cost ,had mine done twice under warranty! It’s cambelt off ,and bottom crank pulley then you can get to crank oil seal . Plenty of you tube videos on the issue

Your luck my crank seal went at 8000 miles then again at 12000 ! Although I think vw had a incompetent mechanic do the job

To be fair, the part has been superseded a couple of times - so may be down to poor quality part, rather than fitment.

The seal is ££ however labour will likely be £££.

Do you know if the timing belt has ever been changed? It might be prudent to do this, the timing belt tensioner, water pump, auxiliary belt and coolant. Yes VW has upped the mileage / age change interval on the timing belt but most of these have to come off to change the seal.

Lastly, some of these engines have a wet belt driving the oil pump (my CXGB does but I don’t know about all engine derivatives). There has been some recent discussion about changing this small wet belt when doing the front oil seal as the mechanic will have direct access to it. Failures are not something you hear much about unlike Ford Transits!

Do some google research on the topics and perhaps watch some videos so you have an understanding of whats involved.

The odd one is starting to crop up on 5.1s, but they'ye got age, mileage, and a history of God-knows-what-oil under their belts.

I plan to change mine at every 2nd cam belt change but your suggestion to do it with the seal is probably wise.

How certain is it to be the crank oil seal? Is it possibly anything else?

There is some oil on the rocket cover at the top, too.

It could be oil from higher up that's dribbled down, although the photo is suggestive of a blown front crank seal.

The only way youll know for sure is to delve in for a closer look.
