My van wont scan!

Hi all,

The van I recently bought is driving perfectly and isn’t showing any faults, but last night I decided to do a vehicle scan just to check everything over.

I went to a friend who has a Launch scanner, but straight away it asked for the VIN number to be entered, which he said he’d never seen before. After entering it, the scanner came back with “couldn’t find any modules.”

He suggested trying a more advanced scanner at the garage, so I went down today and had the same issue again — asked for the VIN and then showed “couldn’t find any modules.” He said it’s something he’s never come across before.

Has anyone experienced this issue?

I’ve done a bit of searching and found a few posts mentioning aftermarket stereos causing communication problems, but my van has no aftermarket stereo or electrical modifications.

I’m wondering if there could be another simple explanation, as obviously not being able to scan the vehicle could become a problem. I do know the garage that has serviced and maintained the van, so they must have scanned or tested it at some point. Unfortunately they’re closed until Monday, so I can’t ask whether there are any blockers or anything unusual fitted.

Ideally, I’d like the van to work with normal generic diagnostic tools rather than needing something specialist.

I’ve also spoken to a VAG specialist auto electrician, and he said he’s never seen this issue before either.

Any ideas or anyone found a fix for something similar? Thanks.

what scanning device/software are you using? What year/ model is the van? Is there an OBD dummy socket fitted? Has it got any fancy aftermarket security?

No security fitted

T32 2016 4 motion lwb 2.0 Bi Turbo.

One scanner was a Launch
One was a Bosh (halfords garage)

Power is to the OBD as the wireless thing they plug in was powerd up. Both asked for the VIN, both said no moduals found.

I would start by confirming its not a dummy socket (even though it has power)
Check the back of the OBD port and make sure there are 4 wires going into coming from a nearby loom, could be an extension socket with power and no canbus connections ??
Yup, a properly installed dummy socket will have power but no data.

Eveb though its in the exact position?

So i just spoke to my pal. He said it was the fist thing hi thought of. Its fully wired in to the loom with manufacturers loom tape on, doesnt appear tamperd with at all.

Still sounds like a dummy socket or some sort of security system has been installed. If it was a private purchase could you go back to the previous owner and ask them?

Any they didn’t try and fix it?
Doesn’t sound like much of a specialist to me….

Yes gone back to the seller whom i know. Not a summy port, no aftermarket things added.

The garage didnt knoe i was coming jjst went to see if they could scan it as they serviced it most of its life. Wasnt booked in just turned up.

I knkw i could take it an auto electrition but ideally id like one with plenty of VW experience so im not wasting money chacing random things if that makes sense.

The o ly thing I've chamged on it is the touch screen now i know sometimes from reading if you fit an aftermarket sterio it can cause issues, so wondered if that had something to do with it and I've had the sispention changed

It might have a Ghost or similar fitted. Dealers ask for them to be removed before doing warranty work as they can and do block programming
