MOT - Class 4/Class 7 issue

Hi All,

My T6 (T32, factory panel van, converted to kombi with side and rear windows) has always been MOT'd as Class 4. My understanding is that due to this it is classed as a dual purpose vehicles and so goes through as Class 4 not Class 7 - according to the V5 it has a mass in services of 1,908kg and given its got 5 seats then it appears to tick the right boxes.

The MOT was due to run out on March 5th, and I'd completely forgot. I'm going away today so needed it done ASAP, so booked it into KwikFit last minute yesterday where it passed and I drove away happy.

I've had a call from KwikFit today saying that they believe they've made a mistake and should've tested as Class 7 - they were asking for a photo of the vehicles VIN number, but wouldn't really explain why. I'm now away until March 9th and can't provide the VIN, so they said they'd ring back then.

I'm not sure what the VIN number will tell them. My understanding is that vehicles are MOT'd as presented, and my vehicle was presented to them as a 5 seater dual purpose vehicle weighing under 2,040kg so is absolutely Class 4.

Any advice as to what's going on? Can they decide to rescind the MOT if they're not happy? The guy on the phone seemed very sheepish, it almost sounded a bit scammy.

Cheers,

Class 4 is only for vehicles with a Maximum Gross weight of up to 3,000KG.
Your van has a Maximum Gross weight of 3,200KG.
But your van was tested and passed, the MOT certificate is still valid.
Dual purpose vehicles= class 4 regardless of weight.

Post 2 in this thread should help;
In any event, they issued an MOT certificate, it is valid.

Mine was a T32 panel van before having 3 seat bench and additional side windows and I also have a camping pod in the back which converts to a bed. It had it's 1st mot last year at VW Dealership. Came out with a shiny class 4 mot. I queried it and was told class 7 not required.

That’s because it now identifies as a “motor caravan” which falls into class4. Credit to the MOT tester for recognising it as such.

Thanks for you help and advice guys! Glad for the reassurance that I can enjoy my holiday without worrying about my MOT (and therefore insurance) being cancelled!

I went to a few local garages, all took one look at the vin plate and said class 7 (t32 factory kombi) tried explaining but wouldn't budge. Just got it done as a 7 in the end

I had a very similar experience, at the end of the day there's only so far you can push it.
