I have a VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER T32 KOMBI HIGHLINE LWB 150 2018 petrol engine and had a full service recently. When I opened the bonnet I was surprised to see parts which I have never noticed before! Could someone tell me if there is a cover missing please?MY ENGINE BAY.webp

There is a cosmetic engine cover, if you are sure it was present when you delivered the van for the service I’m assuming the workshop never fitted it back.
It will have no consequence on the operation of the engine but maybe worth a visit to get it back or get them to post it.
As they would have a loose cover kicking around at the end of the working day they should have contacted you.

Thanks for your reply. I did send an e mail and photograph to the garage; these are their two replies.

"Looking at the picture, it looks like the top cover is missing, i have spoken to the workshop manager regarding this.

At the end of each job the bays and worktops are striped down, so if there are any covers left off they are picked up quickly.

I also have checked in the store room where we keep a few covers etc from scrapped cars and there are no v/w covers in there.

I will ask the technician that worked on yours on Monday to see if he remembers anything too".

SECOND REPLY:

"Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

We have contacted our local VW parts supplier and they do not list a cover for your registration. Therefore, we believe it came here without one.

We have also checked online and it appears only the diesel models have a cover fitted in this area".

Although I cannot be sure that it had a cover, I have had the van for five years and regularly top up the levels so when I raised the bonnet after the service (several days after when I returned to Wales having had it serviced in Wiltshire ) I was immediately "taken aback" at seeing things that I had never seen before! I have searched everywhere for photos which I have taken but I have none of the engine bay. This why I am convinced that a cover is missing!
I am reassured that this will not affect the engines performance but would be grateful if you could send me a picture and/or link to somewhere that I can purchase one or at least what it looks like for searching any breakers yards!

The covers main purpose is acoustic, so I would be surprised if they fitted one to the TSi.

The only engjne covers I san find say TDi on the top in red or silver, which clearly would not be fitted to TSi.

Thats not to say they never same with that on certain TSi models, just that I cant find one.

Also I cant see any mounting hardware with the rubber bushes in your picture.

Check on EBay, maybe a mechanic in your area has one for sale.
There aren’t a few TSI owners on the Forum, try having a Search with TSI and send them a direct message.

VAG engine covers tend to pop on the engine, not bolt on. I have circled in yellow where it would attach to. Whether yours was fitted with one originally, I have no idea.

Thankyou Manfrotto for your reply
@Vanlady I've got a 2018 TSI will check tomorrow if it has a cover
Thankyou Bargy for your reply, I look forward to your inspection. Would it be possible to send me a photo?

Our T6.1 TDi did not come with one fitted but I got one from Vanstyle and fitted it myself.

I've never seen a tsi with an engine cover.
@Vanlady as promised a couple of not so good pictures

Thankyou for the photos. I am still convinced that there was something there because I have never seen these parts! What are these parts and if there was a cover what could it have been? Would a TDi cover have fitted? Someone mentioned a "cosmetic" cover, have you heard of (or seen) such a thing?

They are all cosmetic covers, on a Diesel they may make a few % reduction in the noise level but that’s it, the petrol engine is far quieter by nature.
You are far better off without a cover, if there is a leak etc you’ll see it. It’s one of the first things I remove and leave off when I buy a car.
Regarding what the parts are, that’s a bigger topic and unless you are going to maintain it I wouldn’t be concerned.
Nothing to worry about.
