Looking at a T6 150 that had a high pressure fuel pump replaced - dodgy?

Hi all, spot of assistance if you please....

Looking at a high mileage (160k) T6 150.

It seemingly has been well looked after but looking at the SH in the last 12m it has had £6k in work!

Feb this year - New egr cooler and high pressure fuel pump (HPFP)
Jul - 2 x new injectors and fuel filter
Nov - waterpump, timing belt, aux belt

Is the HPFP and then injectors something to worry about? Potential for crackered engine if injectors have failed after a fuel pump failure?

Is the Nov potentially connected to the HPFP failure?

The van is pretty much exactly what I'm after but a bit of googling has got me worried.

Any help appreciated.
 
Water pump and belts are routine maintenance, I would see it as a bonus that they have just been done

HPFP can cause issues with injectors when they fail and it seems that may have happened here ie a bit of something making its way into the fuel system and getting to injector
If the van has done mileage after the feb and jul work then hopefully it has all been resolved
 
I've had dramas with HPFP and injectors before . . .

there's two ways of looking at this:



#1 - If the HPFP/Injectors/full flush etc etc has been done properly and at a reputable VAT registered garage then its a good thing . . . as you now have brand new or recon parts that will give you years of happy T6`ing. - and you shouldn't have to worry about this parts for a long time.


#2 - if the job hasn't been done to VW spec/diesel specialist standards at say a back street garage or "uncle bob" you could be asking for trouble down the road.

one of the conditions is a full fuel system flush, to rid the whole system of the metal filings and contaminants. . .

VW official book works also include using some NEW fuel lines !!!! - which may be a bit excessive imho.

im assuming that previous owner had lost faith in the van after getting the work done?





either way its worth the gamble if the work has been done properly. . .


also fwiw - if the work had not been done quickly the HPFP will be re-trashed very quickly after the 1st repair . . within hours/days/weeks.


that's what happened to me friends Ford 2.0tdci - swapped out the derv filter and a set of recon injectors @ £1k . .

broke down the following day, taken to a derv specialist - diag`d as a failed HPFP that had broken down putting metal filings in the system, knackerd the new injectors etc et c.

he ended up with another £4k bill for a recon HPFP + 4x injectors + full flush _+ filters + tank of fuel

Work done at reputable VW/Audi garage.

Its done 20k since all the work.

My concern is buying a lemon with a knackered engine - I assume there is no way to test if metal in the fuel has done additional damage?

Garage is shut until 3rd but I can try sounding them out to see if they will have done flushes etc. They spent 4 hours replacing it - would that allow for flushes?

The EGR was replaced at the same time - I assume these are unconnected?

The guy seems legit but I really do not want to be landed with a big problem van.
 
If you're not happy or confident, walk away.
 
well if its done 20K since the fuel system work i would have no issues.

if it was in warranty from VW, they would honour any 3rd party work if its done as per the book, with oem parts and at a VAT garage.

EGR valve/cooler is unrelated,

metal in fuel from HPFP wont damage other engine parts.

the main thing is that its been regularly serviced and had the correct oil changes. .


if you call your local VWCV garage you can request the vans history (as they stopped doing log books now)

and can also check for any outstanding recalls,

Problem is the several week turnaround time for results!

I think it’s 48 hours by email, Miller test kit. Have a look online.
There is also a near immediate response to email enquiries from experienced oil analysts to any questions you may have. A wealth of knowledge that easily outweighs the doubts of the unknown.
