Look what some nice person did

Yep, and having to ask a colleague to hose down the soles of my boots to remove human brain matter that became embedded while dealing with a messy RTA reinforces the need to drive diligently.
Absolutely, though I don't ascribe to the "within the speed limit is necessarily safe" approach.

Don't judge everyone by your own standards. Controlling a vehicles velocity is one of rhe simplest, most fundamental tasks a driver is required to so, and some of us do pay close attention.
Apart from the time when we don't realise that we are momentarily not paying close attention. I don't care how much training or how much a person may consider themselves to be 100% attentive, the human mind will go off on a tangent from time to time and there's nothing any of us can do about it.

This is it - I’m not often having to look at the speedo to judge speed, if you pay attention to your surroundings plus the engine noise etc (or like me use cruise control as much and often as possible) then it’s easy.

Because you've never been caught. Everyone with a hole in their arse has glanced down at the speedo and gone "whoops" more than once.
I find it easy to judge speed and I use cruise control a lot - although one becomes aware it still needs intervention on downhills. Even if there were times I may slipped over the limit and -as you say, I’ve never been caught that just proves it’s pretty easy to pay attention.

Blows the “speed cameras are just another tax” theory that some people say out of the water though as if you are paying attention you spot the speed limit signs, the camera signs and the cameras themselves, along with the surrounding vehicles not overtaking you. It’s not like they hide this stuff - we all get the same warning/advanced information.

Speed is part of the mix - staying alert and in control is clearly necessary too. Speed affects the outcome of you miss either of those second points though by increasing stopping distances, making it harder to regain control or by making a collision harder and therefore increasing injury/risk of death.

Exactly this. A skilled driver can maintain a surprisingly exact speed from visual and audio cues alone.

Agreed, part of the mix, but not the whole of the mix. In his later years my FIL, GRHS, was very particular about keeping within the speed limit, but by the time we managed to persuade him to hang up his driving gloves, his car looked like something out of a demolition derby. 🫣

The law needs to be changed then. The number of accidents seems to be increasing. Especially on motorways like the M60, which regularly gets closed. I am convinced this is due to people looking at their mobiles (I actually saw a guy in the middle lane with an iPad resting on his steering wheel playing a driving game - I almost cant believe it myself).

I had a spell catching a bus at rush hour a few years back, I counted (on average) between 5 and 6 out of 10 drivers were holding and using their phones (on a busy A road).
to be fair the M60 isn't fit for purpose.

My Missus is only response and pursuit trained compared to my full Class 1, but she could probably out drive me. I cant be arsed with "making progress" any more, im happy to get there alive and not having killed anyone even if it takes me an xdtra 30 seconds.

Clearly petrol and diesel cant be all that expensive the way some eejuts fly about like their haemorrhoids are on fire.

This is what happened to me on Friday night in all the rain. Some lovely lady, according to her husband, got panicked by a big puddle and having pulled over to the left of the road decided just as I started going past to pull a U-Turn right in front of me. Catapulted across the road in to said puddle and got buried in a mud bank. Happy Days.

Holy Trump! Are you ok?
Yeh fine thanks. Daughter and her mate were a bit shook up. Insurance handling everything. Currently have a Ford 9 seat plugin Hybrid minibus from hire company till mine is sorted or written off.

Though it was going to be drivable when tow guy pulled my out of mud bank but something gone underneath which is why the front wheel is at an agle.

Better not tell the full tale of Mrs A outrunning an unmarked Merseyside Volvo T5 in her T5. Good job it was in Lancashire and the "bizzies" saw the funny side of things when she pulled up on our police house driveway.

Well this sh*t show is still on going from November. Van is still in at the Insurance Repairers unable to be started on as they are waiting for 1 part to arrive from VW in Germany. Its the Impact Protection Beam behind the front bumper and VW dont appear to have any in stock / made. I have told the repairers over & over again that we dont want "green/used" part fitting to the van as it wold have no guarantee from them and to be honest if it was a wing mirror they were talking about it wouldnt be a problem but something as integral to safety as this. Every time it gets near to the next delivery date VW email them to say sorry you wont be getting it. Currently pushed back to the 26th June. personally dont think were ever going to see it. Repairers think VW waiting for stack of orders for same part before they make some more. Its getting close to when we are due to go away so as much as it pains us have asked to them to look in to the possibility of having the van written off as non repairable so we can get paid out, buy a new van and have it upgraded with the bits & bobs we need to go away.
