Key removal other than in Park

I am sure when I first got van I could only remove key if in Park, now seems I can remove in any position.

Read couple other threads but none seem to suggest why and what is the fix.

Assume it is a repair covered by all in warranty and van needs to go in next month for full service plus couple of other issues so will raise issue but wondering if it then opens the door for delays if new parts are needed.

Anyone experienced this issue and likely repair?

I may be incorrect but would think it could be an adjustment problem. I sort of think also if a vehicle is stopped in park and needs to be moved that their is a way of freeing things to allow gears to be put in neutral but have really no idea about either. :)

I suspect if vehicle needed to be hard towed for example the key would need to be in ignition and shift to neutral to release steering and gear box

Will call dealer today

from research on this site I suspected gear selecter/micro switch issue

Van in for service and EML issue (will update that one on a separate thread, needless to say yet again they can't find fault so no fix)

so the conversation goes:
ME- can you look at the gear selecter key removal issue
VW-yep service done technician reports no issue with gear park and key removal, perhaps it's intermittent fault
ME-noooo, it is permanent and been like it for a number of weeks, is your technician competent?, I will check it when back from test drive
VW-check vehicle and your correct key can be removed in any position
ME-yep thats what I said
VW-think it might be an issue with the barrel
ME-not for me to say but more likely an issue with the selecter and possibly a micro switch
VW- yes tech has checked and its is a switch issue, ordered parts and will be sorted tomorrow
ME-great

Today
VW- fitted parts, it wasnt the lever/switch it is the selector
ME- FFS
VW-ordering a new selecter for tomorrow

my only concern now is are they capable of fitting it and setting up properly - it is very scary!!!!

on the plus side covered under all-in-warranty and I guess I wll have 2 years warranty on that item

Only if you make a contribution to the cost. Otherwise the warranty will be the same as the rest of the van.
So in theory the work and the part might only have few weeks warranty if coming to the end of the plan if I have not paid towards the repair?

What age of van is it?
2019

They said it wasn’t selector or MS but play in the selector mechanism. Fortunately covered under the all-in-warranty so got replaced Friday

They suggested it was a £800 part but they seem around £400 on the net

Appears to be working now as it should
