I have the Discover Media head unit in my 2018 T6. It’s okay but it’s never had the Apple Car Play bits activated. I don’t know whether to pay VW to activate it or sell the head unit and go aftermarket instead but would like to keep the dash display bits compatible with the new one etc. What’s people’s thoughts?

You may struggle to sell it as most folks know now that they are coded to the original van, and it is not a straightforward process to get it recoded - if at all. A few people may have figured out by now how to do it, but they will be in the minority.

I paid the fee to have CarPlay enabled, works well but must admit I still tend to use the inbuilt satnav as it’s just as good as Apple maps, google.
Main advantage is being able to use Waze on longer trips/abroad as it picks up delays/cameras etc.

luckily i've got the crappy head unit without nav in my van, so the decision is easier for me!

my car came unlocked with it (i use Android Auto) ..i use it with Waze, along with the ability to 'ok google' whilst driving which gives a lot of useful features including playing music/send texts/whatsapp messages etc whilst driving.

Went after market....Kenwood ...which has CarPlay as standard and other apps ....it’s not a cheap option but you don’t have to keep paying VW to upgrade
If you keep the factory unit and want to add more speakers later you may have to add an amp but by buying after market most units have all the power you need in one package

but sound and functionality are very personal...what suits you ,might not suit everyone:whistle:

Upgrade it! By adding Android Auto and (I assume but don't use Apple) CarPlay gives you an upgradable future. The VW sat nav is archaic.

Only motorhomers use sat nav co-ordinates.

Hmmmmmmm. I swapped my T5.1 head unit for a Kenwood one with the CarPlay / Android Auto features. I guess it’s what you’re used to using really. I tend to use Google Maps a lot and just struggle to get used to the VW satnav.
