Reversing up the drive that’s on a slope and using clutch as trying not to hit neighbours car :) van judders when slipping clutch. Fine on a flat and nothing when’re 1st +

expected/normal with a DMF?

How many miles has it done ? It does sound like the duel mass flywheel to me my T5.1 started doing it in 1st gear after about 15000 miles I eventually swapped it at around 40000 miles , it’s now started to do it again at 55000

T6 / 54000 ish. It’s fine going forwards in all the gears.

It’s been remapped to 150 from 102 by dealer before I got it. Wonder if to much torque low down.

Should reverse uphill expected to be smooth like a normal type clutch?

So. Tried reversing up drive from cold this morning.

no judder:/

Is there any kind of test you can do that will show up a DMF is on way out or shot?

Reversing up a hill is the best way to test if a dmf is in need of replacing. Irony.

Mine has done it from nearly new but only when it warms up . It needs to be driven for more than 20 mins in the winter .The other time it’s bad is if it’s just done a Regen and all very hot .It will start to do it when pulling away forward. Dealer won’t look at it under warranty unless I agree to pay if VW won’t .Its done 50000 now so I just live with it .

Thanks for reply’s.

Drove home for 30 mins from garage and reversed up drive and didn’t do it again.

Had a proper alignment done today as it’s all making me paranoid with the judder at 60 in 5th as well.
Was quite far out but all spot on now :)

Slightly better.

They test drove and suggested get all wheels balanced. Feels like whole van rather than DMF.

Wheels and tyres only 2 months old. They are 20” though. Came on van when purchased. Few places I called didn’t want to know Just balancing 4 wheels. :/

If I accelerate off at 50 in 4th feels smooth.

Accelerate off in 5th at 50 (1400rpm ish) I can feel a judder/pulse through pedal till it’s just upto 2000 rpm /65mph then pedal smooths out.

Cruising at 60 in 5th slight vibration through wheel/van but no pulsing through accelerator.

Probably multiple things know my luck! :/

That's likely your problem. The 5sp gearboxes are weak. You said it was remapped by a dealer, was it done properly ie torque limited so it peaks at 3200rpm instead of the 2100rpm.
Adding 20s makes the issue much worse as they have more rotational inertia. Ideally it needs custom mapping properly with the 20s on.

5th gear at 1400rpm is alot of load if starting to make peak torque there and the diff judders.

No clarity on the map applied.

Think your right. Next thing to tick off the list.

Going to give Pendle a call in the morning and book in.

Thanks.

My van judders reversing uphill (150ps 6spd manual), it is also starting to do it in first gear. Feathering the clutch controls the judder so it’s not a big issue for drivability.

Is this a DMF or clutch issue, or both? What sort or urgency should it be looked in to, do they go on to fail in a big way that ends up damaging more components or do they just tend to start being troublesome and jerky to drive?

What mileage?
Not sure how it goes down the line.
A remap at Pendle sorted my issues. Van came wait a aweful map on it. Luckily only drove 400 miles before I had Pendle check it. Way to much torque low down.
Still small judder reversing up hill just on clutch no power of cold but fine when warm.

67k miles. I bought the van with 53k earlier this year, I first noticed it around 55k miles, it’s got slightly worse over that time but it’s a very gradual degradation.

Mines on 54K. Others on here will know more than me about what happens. Maybe get a specialist to have a look? I think new clutch+DMF is approx £800.

I took a pricey warranty out for the 1st year. Obviously after doing that nothing happened for 12 months! lol.

I’m well out of warranty, just trying to work out how quickly I need to get it sorted or not.

I have owned 4 new transporters since 2005....2 5speed petrols T5's, 1 6speed diesel T5 and latest 6 speed diesel T6.
The first 2 T5s had clutch judder in reverse uphill from new. They both travelled over 100,000 kms. and never got worse over that time. I found you could lessen the judder by slipping clutch with higher revs on initial take off in reverse. This seemed to work on both T5's.
The 3rd T5...6 speed diesel, had slight judder sometimes, (from new), and never got worse. I used same higher revs. Same 100,000kms.
Latest T6 has no judder from new .
In short, from my experience, I wouldn't worry about yours. If it is only doing it in reverse it seemed pretty normal on my 5 speed boxes. It didn't lead to anything.
Cheers.
