I’ve never used ply before, is this normal?

Just cutting some ply for my seat base install and it’s all splitting through the middle, have I done something wrong?

It is difficult to see from the image but there are different grades of Ply available. I am not a carpenter but some is only fit for rough work and packing boxes some is for higher quality work or even marine use. Have a look on line and try to gain a little knowledge on what might be available. Some local stores may have ply which has been standing around in a yard and a weekend Charlie might pull it out to get rid of it but also the more common stores that one sees in every town stock very little of anything worth having. It may be be worth while looking on line if their is little choice. The better quality ply has evenly spaced layers some of the worst tend to look like an overfilled sandwich Also use a fine toothed saw when cutting if the teeth are too bold and look like a those on a chain saw they might just smash the edge.

To give an idea some on here may not be available here but wiki is quite good usually of gaining a reasonably informed view on anything. their may be some better information on some wood work related sites.

Looks like cheap Chinese ply, did you buy it from B&Q or similar? Theirs is notoriously bad. Use a decent timber merchant and ask for Baltic birch ply exterior grade. Personally I’d use Marine ply or buffalo board. If you have a James Latham depot nearby, theirs will be good quality but top dollar. You get what you pay for with plywood.

Most timber yards do free CNC board cuts, far better than you’d achieve at home and easier to get home than a full size sheet. Just be sure you know what size you want.

Marine ply might be overdoing it - depending on your budget (2 or 3x the cost) - but no harm in using it of course. But as everyone has said, try a timber merchants or Travis Perkins. Even Wickes are ok.
The bit you had was probably not stored flat and in a damp area.

Not seen any delaminate as much as that before though. Where and when did you get it?

A good thing about having a T6 and a trailer, I never have timber delivered, I always collect it.
That way I get to sort out the warped, split and damaged stuff that they'll happily send out on a delivery lorry, and only take the good stuff!

It was from Wickes, I have actually got a cutting plan prepared for wherever I get the next bit (only need 3 cuts) but also not looking to spend a fortune. I was going to go to B&Q even though I despise them but I’ll try Travis Perkins instead! I paid £16 for the bit that split so not a huge amount but I’m still trying to do it for less than an “off the shelve” solution and it’s quickly adding up

They would probably refund that - I’ve never had plywood that bad, even at B&Q.

My favourite supplier is Atlantic Timber in Altrincham - they do Garnica lightweight ply and will happily supply DIY. I tried James Latham in MCR - lots of great products but they would only do trade.
