It's a drag staying neutral.

Noticed today that with my DSG when your stationary and in 'Drive', there seems to be no drag on the engine. Lift off the foot brake and the revs increase from 800 rpm to 1000rpm before you start to move off.

However with the handbrake applied and no foot brake, the rear of the van squats down as the front wheels are under power

Am I right in thinking that the DSG control unit completely disengages the clutch when your stationary on the foot brake so that there is no drag, in the way you would experience with an old school auto box with a torque converter?

Does this mean there's no need to select neutral when your stopped at the lights?

Also discovered there is a sweet spot at the top of the brake pedal travel where you can bring the van to a stop and hold it stationary, without the stop/start shutting down the engine. If you then decide to press down further on the brake you can then make the engine turn off. With practice, it's handy if your only stopping for a few seconds and don't want to start/stop. Haven't looked, so not sure if it's just a brake light on/off switch on the brake pedal or a potentiometer that could be adjusted or tuned to make this happen if your van doesn't do this already.

correct there is no need to go for park or neutral as it fully disengages.

Being able to lightly apply the brake to remain stationary bit not stopped is by design, takes a wee bit of practice to get right every time but its handy eh
