Insurance on a caddy for first vehicle

Hi all, I'm in the process of getting a vw caddy mk4 for my sons first car (he a sensible 17 who appreciates a nice bus). I've found one but just been quoted £5880. Think this is because it's a 2.0l 101bhp and not the 1.6l 101 bhp. I'm really want him to have a caddy for the main reason there are only 2 seats for him and his bird, so there no room for mates being a distraction. Has anyone else been in the same position and sorted out a cheaper deal? I know its depending on post codes that can affect prices, but with all the cars we have together, they don't combine to £2k. Is there any insurance brokers or companies that ain't obvious that i could try or advice? Thanks in advance

The algorithms will say that young lads tend to crash works vans, so he will be seen as a high risk to insurers. It won't matter that it might not be a works van. He'd be better off in a cheap to insure ordinary car for a couple of years to accrue some no claims. Plenty of time for him to have something nicer in the future.

Yeah unfortunately. Thought it would be around the same price as a car because it only has 2 seats, so less of a distraction without passengers being passengers of there age. If i could get it down to £3k I would be happy-ish🤔.

Try a maxi life, they have more seats which can easily be removed. This was the only way my friends son could get insurance on a caddy. A SWB life’s are pretty rare

Just missed out on a swb life unfortunately but I've still got time yet so ill keep looking. And try and get a price for that instead. Suppose it would be classed as a car so no ulez crap to worry about.

I think I'd settle for a couple of years of him driving a 1.0 litre Corsa, then move on to a Caddy.
£5800 is utterly mad money for a year of insurance, IMO.

  • i put my son in a citroen c1 for the first two years nice little specced car for his commute , zero road tax at the time.
  • i figured he wouldnt get banned in the first 2 years ,due to speeding , new drivers only allowed 6 points.
  • still about 1500 quid .
  • he freaking hated it.
  • lol
  • however after 2 years he got some no claims , and now rides a 3 litre twin turbo diesel bmw, about 1300 quid fully comp
  • he freaking loves it

Totally agree nearly 6k is ridiculous especially as it paid 2k for each of my girls first cars. Can't stick him in a vauxhall otherwise he will stick me in a home at the first opportunity😂 He's a proper vag and McLaren enthusiast

Cant do that, the deal i had with all my kids were i buy there first car, insurance, tax and servicing/repairs for the first year of driving. Was a good idea i had with the first daughter🤔 forgot how quick times comes when you have 2 more😪

I bought my oldest a Metro as a first car. She's now driving an X5M while she awaits her new Aston Martin to be built.

Next daughter along I bought her a 107, a great little car, but shes not a car person and drives a knackered MINI D.

Fortunately I've a few years yet before the final one is old enough.

I do actually have a black cat, so that falls flat at the first hurdle.

So just found a caddy life swb and the quote has come back just under £2100 with a box and £7800 without a box🤯. So really insurance don't actually make sense and they are just robbing c u next Tuesday people!!
Yup - can't possibly imagine why the premium would be so much higher without a black-box.
