Insurance - NCD - Motorhome to Private Car *Urgent*

Hi,

Our Camper is our only vehicle. Both equal drivers - thus every couple of years we swap whose names= the policy is in so we can both maintain our NCD. Never been an issue and NCD always accepted.

Camper policy was in my name with Caravan Guard. Switched to Brentacre in the Mrs name - as they provide Business Use: I get a works car allowance: Now have to prove I have Business Use.

We have just purchased run around vehicle - thus insured in my name. Sent proof of NCD - however rejected as the Caravan Guard document states Motorhome. Phoned Insurance company - asked for a bit of common sense - i.e. it's a VW Transporter - however they insist will only accept Private Car NCD - so won't even accept if it was classed as van rather than Motorhome.

So as it stands I've lost my NCD - they've given me a price without the NCD - surprisingly it's not gone up by much but my big worry is loss of 9 years NCD.

Has anyone been in a similar position and found a company that will accept Motorhome NCD for their car?

Urgency is bought policy at the beginning of the week - uploaded NCD - only just been rejected - collect car tomorrow. So don't know if stick as is or get a new quote - assuming can solution above

Thanks in advance

PS Googling - if it was the other way round some companies mirror NCD for a car to a Motorhome, but struggling the other way round

Just so you don't think I'm losing the plot

Did you get your NCD honoured on the run-around that you have just insured in your name? In which case you've not lost 9 years NCD. It's only an issue with Brentacre.
Looking online it appears that NCD lasts 2 years if you don't insure another vehicle in your name. which is interesting as the wife hasn't had a car in her name since hers was written off last Feb, so this has been a learning point for us.
So if your NCD has been honoured on the car then why not just take the discount on the van for this 12 month period and then next year swap over wife to the car and her NCD will be honoured and maintained on the car. You will both then have proof of NCD to transfer from a CAR not a motorhomean no one has lost their NCD.
That makes sense in my head anyway.

Googling suggests you aren't the first to encounter such an issue and that you'll get more luck going via a broker. Try Adrian Flux.

Apols - perhaps I wasn't clear in my message - was written in a bit of a rush as trying to sort it all out

The issue is with the run around vehicle - as new policy obv they needed proof of NCD - so sent them last policy I had - which was with Caravan Guard - it's been rejected as on a Motorhome.

No issue with Brentacre - was just clarifying Camper is insured in Wife's name - hence in theory able to transfer NCD I had with Caravan Guard - but seemingly not

Hope makes sense now!?

Just need to find an insurer that will accept it or at least mirror it then after 12 months they'll issue you 10 years NCD on the car.
Agree, people have recommended likes of Admiral, have got a quote and seeing if they will accept NCD that's earned on Motorhome.

The bizarre thing is, Admirals price - with my 9 Years NCD is still circa £200 dearer than the revised price I've been offered with no NCD - work that one out!!

It's a Suzuki Swift (new) - so assume low risk, we're both in our 50's - so again low risk - possibly why not having any no claims isn't as bad as feared

Best to hang onto/convert any NCD if you can even if it costs a little more this year as it'll pay off in the long run. Good luck.

As @Howzat suggests, just find a different insurer for your runabout - one that accepts NCD transferred from a motorhome policy. Suspect will lots will as it seems a bizzare rule.
