Comes down over the mobile 3g/4g connection, no WiFi on that one (I have the same one).
I haven't had the email and no update has appeared yet but I'd guess they roll it out in batches rather than everyone at the same time.

How did you get that VW have never contacted me about software updates, I just thought you must have to pay for a service. Mine is 2020 sept
I'm off to VW Retrofits in Redditch shortly to have the update performed for £100 + tax. 2020 too.

The software simply updates the network as 3G is being turned off. The SOS won’t work once 3G has been turned off unless the update is applied.
Mine arrived on the head unit. Over air (via the same mobile network the SOS works on). First it popped up with an alert saint it needed to download the update. Pressed ok. Took a while but eventually I got an alert (might have been the following day) they the update was ready to install. Hit ok. Installed and rebooted. Had to login to my VW account on the head unit again after it was done.
You might not be seeming the update option if you are not logged in. Check you are first.

I’ve not done anything, but noticed in the last week or so I occasionally get a message about me being the primary user. However it disappears pretty much as soon as it appears. Even if I don’t press ok.
So I’m thinking something must have been updated. Either when it was in for a service or maybe over the air.

I too got an email recently about a software update.
The first time I started the van (71-plate t6.1) after that an invitation to update appeared, but I was about to drive off somewhere so I didn't do it.
The second time I was invited again, but again I was about to drive.
There has been no third invitation: have I missed my chance forever or did it update itself anyway?
I see that I'm on version 0920 (of something) where OP is 0890.
If I click the Update Software button it says "Error: no data available. Please insert a source with software update data or check the source"
