HELP PLEASE Multiple error codes after dead battery, won't clear limp mode

I have a converted 2017 T32 and van has been sat for a month or so on the drive, came to start last week and completely dead battery, charged battery for most of the day, van started fine however shed loads of warning lights on the dash and no speedo and erratic fuel gauge. Checked running voltage of the battery and is only around 12.2V. Replaced battery with new fully charged Bosch battery, would not let me register the battery using Carista as the codes were still standing. Ignition voltage drops to about 10.5V then returns to 12.4-12.5V when running

I plugged into Carista and the codes (which immediately return following a reset) are attached as images. The left rear parking sensor signal error is a known issue as the wife decided to check how it liked being reversed into a tree stump a few years ago and never got round to changing it, initial thoughts were an alternator issue so took to a mate who has a garage at the end of my street and he says he can't figure out what is wrong, although he has managed to successfully register the battery. All fuses have been checked as healthy

I have found another post linked here
that was exhibiting exactly the symptoms my van is experiencing, although mine is not 4motion so no Haldex

Any pointers for me to look at before I have to arrange to get it low loaded to an auto electric shop or main dealer as it is currently in full limp mode and can't drive it far.

Any help greatly appreciated

Have you cleared the codes since the flat battery, if not your wasting your time, clear everything then see whats comes back and then deal with persistent errors not historical ones

Yeah the codes have been cleared with the new battery installed using my Carista and my mates Vagcom/VCDS and all return as before

Then I can only assume you fitted a flat battery, multiple low voltage warnings
I would get it on charge and leave it for a decent period of time until you can be sure the battery is 100% charged (which often takes many hours with small chargers) then drive it and clear all the codes again and see what comes back because somethings not right there

The new battery was on charge overnight before fitting to the van, I'll leave the van running on the drive for an hour or so and try again. It also starts without issue. Cheers

take it for a long drive rather than leave it ticking over
I can’t take it a long drive, it won’t let me rev above 2000rpm. It’s running on the drive just now, I’m going to leave it a bit and might be able to take it a drive later when the roads are quieter. I’ve got Carista plugged in just now and after 35 minutes running at around 1500rpm (with the help of a perfectly calibrated pice of wood) I’ve reset codes and they are still returning although running volts is a little higher at 12.8v

what he said - fully charge the battery for 24hrs+ ( with a 10A+ charger) - (if doing it with battery IN van then use a chassis NEG, dont use BATTERY NEG direct)

then clear all codes,

then do a test drive.

Yeah I’ll give it another go, I charged the new battery overnight with this bad boy initially before fitting it. I’ll give it another go

Running volts? Engine running you mean? You should be seeing a lot more than 12.8 with the engine running.

That was my thoughts too, was expecting 14 ish. The van did register 14.6 a short while ago but promptly shot down to mid 12's after a moment, the low system voltage code did reset but the others remained, the low voltage alarm has now reappeared.

Currently the error codes remain and the following dash lights are on

Coil - flashing
Air bag - solid light
Tyre pressure - solid light (tyre pressures are good)
ABS - solid light

Limp mode remains. Van is idling spot on and starts without issue

The brand new battery has been disconnected and on charge since last night, refitted it and no change at all to error codes, nothing will reset and running voltage is stable at 12.2 to 12.3 volts, exactly same as when van not turned on. Tried 2 more batteries and no change either (1 is the old battery and the other is out of my Touareg)
Screenshots of Carista following idle are below along with a picture of the dash.

Just away to look for some matches 🙄

It sounds like a bad connection somewhere then - If you have checked all the relevant fuses the next thing would be the earths.

With a plethora of smart knowledgable minds on here I am sure it can be sorted in time but have you considered looking for a respected auto electrician in your area or finding an Independent VAG Garage who may sort it out for you?

I certainly have, I have an auto electrician nearby however wanted to open up for discussion on here to discount a simple solution. I have a VW van centre in Glasgow as well, it’s just the limp mode that’s concerning me taking it too far. It will get sorted somehow. I’m taking it for a run locally tomorrow with the wife following in case it dies on me. Appreciate all the help on here, like you say some knowledgeable folks.

Have you told the van it has a new battery through coding or just swapped them over?
If the ecu thinks it's the old battery it may be limiting the charge.

Are you in the AA or similar they would surely transport your vehicle to a the Garage as obviously a problem?

Yeah, I couldn’t get the battery registered using Carista due to standing alarms however when it was at mates garage the other day he managed to get it registered using Vagcom/VCDS

Hey, just reading your post.....did you manage to get this sorted?

Just for reference I had the same issue, disconnected the battery to carry out some leisure battery work, reconnected everything and turned ignition on to see the same variety of error messages on the dash. Plugged in VCDS and tried to clear the error codes for them to come back straight away. Pooped my pants a lil, took a moment to think and then did the steering full lock left and right and all codes cleared. Cleared codes on VCDS again and all is working fine.

Hope you managed to get your sorted.
