Heat coming from steering column area

Hi, I seem to have hot air coming from the steering rack area. It makes the cowling very hot and gets worse the longer I drive but when I switch on he aircon it stops getting hot and cools down.

Im thinking a hose or something has slpit or come off but can't seem to identify the reason. All vents work as expected.

Any ideas as its driving me crazy especially in the hot weather? Thanks

Hi there, does sound like you have a split heat duct or a heater duct has come away. Strange that as you say all the vents work. I would be taking the the trim off from below the steering column and the cowl around the trim and have the heaters on full to try and identify where it is coming from

Thanks that’s what was thinking but unsure where to start and concerned about air bags in steering wheel etc

I suspect it has happened since I had a new clutch and cylinder. I recall the garage saying they had dash out and maybe steering rack can’t quite remember. But I can never prove it now

Was wondering if anyone else has experienced it.

Thanks

Just reviving this thread as I now have this same issue with the steering column getting very hot @Devon Blue did you resolve the problem?

I looked at the link that @Jan_B but without joining that forum you can't open the images, but reading the description of the fix it doesn't sounds massively complicated, just a bit of a faff (especially if you haven't got the tools!)?

Hi, yes I removed lower dash and used foil tape around heat matrix. You will feel the heat leaking from the joint. Instantly stopped my issues and has been fine ever since. I too followed the link you mention from the German forum.

The heater matrix is located behind the centre console region. Tricky to get to but just persist.

This is my effort. Legs getting very hot on a long journey by the steering column. Let the engine run for a while and felt the heat coming out. Felt better with the aluminum tape. Thanks
