Heading West

It's a good job you were so well stocked up. Hope you have plenty of books / films /TV downloads or whatever it is that keeps you entertained!

Thanks guys, I have had to rent a holiday unit for 5 days so I have my own bathroom/ toilet. I have a view of the ocean so not too bad.
Pretty comfy but would rather be in the van.
Guess tv etc will help pass the time.

Well we are moving again, all 4 of us ended up positive as we expected. Isolation over. Lost 10 days to covid.
Spent last night at a bush camp near Cape LeGrand, these bays have the bluest water I have seen and the finest white sands.
Unfortunately a few shark attacks over the last few years. Seal colonies offshore.
Making our way towards the south West corner of Western Australia.
Free camp tonight at an oval in a small country town.
A few pictures now we are mobile again. 20220706_082132.jpg20220706_160855.jpg20220702_111136.jpg20220705_144648.jpg20220705_142156.jpg20220705_142420.jpg

Terrible timing but, as you say, it could have been worse. I hope the whole gang have recovered and can salvage something of the trip

Here is a few pictures of around Albany WA.
Albany is a largish town on the coast of West Australia. It used to be a whaling station until the 1970s when Australia stopped whaling.
Now it is a port for export of grains, canola, etc.
We went to a national park that had a climb up to Castle rock, up a 8m ladder onto a walkway fixed to the side of the rock, its quite exciting due to the exposure looking down.
Today had a look at some coastal spots, a natural archway, then a cantalevered gantry over the gap, looking down into the boiling sea. Really impressive. WA spent a lot on infrastructure as they are cashed up due to mining royalties.
Good to be back travelling again.

As we get closer to Perth free camps getting rarer as it's school holidays here and we have to stay in either caravan parks or more rustic national Park camping areas.
At least when we pay we get showers and toilets and a camp kitchen to do our cooking and washing up.
Some days it's raining so shelter is pretty good.
A few pictures of different camp kitchens and where we camped for the night giving you an idea what different types of van camping places are around when not using free places.

I don't have a lot of pictures as my phone got wet and died and I had to buy another so lost all my pictures getting across to WA.
Van going well (touch wood) and we have done 3500km and are only 350km from Perth, then will head east towards home.
Writing this at a pub having a dark ale, think I might have to have another, cheers all.20220711_174947.jpg

This is as far west as we go.

This area has wild surf beaches on the Indian Ocean so surfing is popular.

Quite a few caves around here and we went down into one which took over 45 minutes to pass from the entrance to the exit. Fossilised skeletal remains of extinct Australian Megafauna were found in here.
Giant marsupials of kangaroos and wombats but many times bigger than what is found today.

Spending the night at Busselton which has the longest pier/jetty in the southern hemisphere. It's 1.8 km long , we took a walk out to the end and it is very long.

It's about 3500km from here to home so a long drive awaits us , probably take about a week if we take our time.
Should be able to free camp most of the way.
A few pictures of the cave and jetty.Screenshot_20220715-194549_Maps.jpg20220713_141539.jpg20220713_141945.jpg20220713_142014.jpg20220715_165303.jpg20220715_165422.jpg20220715_163011.jpg20220713_142130.jpg

Today started for home, east , spending our last night at a caravan park in a town called Cunderdin, where my wife's father was born 89 years ago.
We will pick up a few small stones and a bit of dirt to put on his grave 20220716_174527.jpg

20220716_175642.jpg20220716_175729.jpgback in South Australia.
This area has sheep, cattle and grains, wheat, barley etc.
From here on we should be able to free camp as it will be getting remote again for the next 2000 kms or so. Finally found something H4 headlights are good for, taking reflections of sunsets.

Heading east towards home, 1900km to go.
Drove out to wave rock as it's well known in Australia so thought we better take a look. Leaving wave rock Heading towards Norseman the road turned to unsealed and we had 290 km till reaching Norseman.
Camped the night at a really interesting free camp called The Breakaways , varied colours of rock strata. Had a campfire at night and a few drinks.
About midnight it started raining and kept up till dawn.
I only have a 2wd van and we had 190km of dirt roads in front of us until we reached the bitumen. Took about 3 hours of slippery wet dirt always mindful of running off the road and getting bogged.
Once we got to the bitumen there was a sign across the road saying road closed, no wonder we saw no traffic. It was open when we started so no problem for us but the fines are very high for driving on a closed road as you chop it up.

Glad to report these vw t6 vans are pretty good off-road, even if only 2wd.I think I will fit more off-road suitable tyres next time.
Here is a few pictures. 20220717_132212.jpg20220717_161656.jpg20220717_163444.jpg20220717_164143.jpg20220717_165748.jpg20220718_104253.jpg20220718_112419.jpg20220718_112427.jpg20220717_140250.jpg20220718_102741.jpg20220717_161320.jpg

Had no phone coverage for a few days.
1100 km or so to go. We have been having fairly short days driving as we are on no hurry to get back.

Free camping in bush camps.
Van still filthy from the muddy road.

I have an app on my phone called wikicamps, it lists all the places you can camp and people leave reviews so it's really handy when looking for overnight stops.
Camped up on the Cliffs overlooking the Southern Ocean, very windy night, had to drop the pop top during the night as wind shaking the van so much.
Driving into a stiff headwind using about 20% more fuel than usual so hopefully tomorrow wind will ease.
At least it's been dry for the last 3 days. 20220720_115541.jpg
