Thanks all for the smiley walk through although pressing the 3 dots next to the picture icon while revealing a line of additional features including the smiley icon has them all greyed out and inactive :-(

It sounds like you’ve got the structured button pressed (the two opposing brackets [ ] which, if you need to edit a quoted message, are handy) so just press it again and your smileys etc should come back to life:

Thanks @Ads_Essex for pointing the brackets out, I have to admit I thought it might have been connected to the "stop start error" that flashed up the other day when I was in Toolstation but all good now!
