Gas locker placement advise please

Hi all - and apologies if this is not the right section to post this.

I have a newly converted T6 and the gas locker is currently positioned directly under the hob, which makes sense in some respects with the least amount of copper piping.

However I am looking to better utilise the space in the rear, behind the driver side rear wheel arch, which currently has a boxed off cupboard housing the leisure battery.

I have seen on some professional coversions such as camperking and autohaus the gas bottle in this position and I wanted to check with the group for any views or any red flags if I was to drill a new vent hole for the gas locker at the rear and run new copper pipes?

This would then provide much needed and more usable storage underneath in the kitchen unit.

Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks

The gas locker is normally installed on the driver side rear section or underneath the rib bed so accessible from the back door normally

.

Have you got a few pictures of your current setup?

Thanks for the quick reply! Just been out to take some photos.

Gas locker currently in the center cupboard under the sink. And last photo shows the rear cupboard, was thinking of making an opening in the rear section and moving the gas locker there.

So my gas safe is the same location as yours but I think the better location is where you're suggesting. If you read the gas regs (only for vans to be hired out) then they shouldn't be in the middle of the van but accessible to a door. The pipe work would be a bit trickier to do but if you think it's achievable then I'd move it. Check out my threads on the gas bottle holders and drop vents too as it will add a touch of customisation to your project.

Hi,

I'm just working out the best location for my gas box. I have a U-shaped furniture setup and would like to locate the box in the compartment on driver's side rear corner (per below picture) so that I can access the bottle from the rear door. What I'm not sure about, as I haven't been under the van yet, is possible places to cut the whole in the floor for the drop vent. Any advice or examples please?IMG_5420a.webp

Firstly will depend on where your exhaust ends as your going to be near the silencer end. Whilst it won’t normally be an issue if you’re parked up with the engine running you could get some exhaust gas blowing back in. Ours had a heat shield there so there wasn’t a direct path from the exhaust to the drop out but then never parked with the engine running for more than a few minutes. Be aware there is a beam across the back underneath as well

Thanks for the reply. I think I need to have a good look under the van.

how did you get on, did you mount it where you planned? I've got the same setup in my T5, but got the top opening gas safe, and cant seem to make everything fit.

@vinylmark - I worked out fine after checking under the van in the right rear section (should have taken photos whilst fitting it) and managed to find a good place for the drop vent hole. The gas locker is one of the fairly common ones with a door on the front rather than the top and I access it via the back cupboard door. I will take a couple of photos of the box in situ and add them here.
