Gas cylinder transportation, camping

Hi, where do you store your gas cylinder when travelling? I have a kombi with pull out hob and sink. I originally thought the roof box would be the safest place if stored well but looking online this isn't allowed. Surely its safer up there than in the van?

Mines just in my removable cooker pod/box in the van. I suppose in a roof box it could become a mortar ejecting at high speed in the event of a crash.
