Flashing Coil Following Conversion Work

Hi all,

I know there have been a few threads regarding flashing coil and most following the process of (1. replace oil pressure sensor,2. check wiring, 3. oil/filter change, 4. oil pressure valve change). I'm currently at stage 3.

In my case is the coil light has come on immediately following it being with a converter for two months. The light comes on as soon as higher revs are required, will turn off when you restart, and will not reappear if you restart once the van is already warm.

I wonder whether anyone might have any particular thoughts on why this error would arise following a van having been worked on in the following ways-Full leisure battery, diesel heater, underslung water tank around spare.

Last thing I need after a pricey conversion is to spend a mountain trying to fix this oil issue-all thoughts appreciated!

Buy yourself VCDS or OBDeleven and find out exactly what the issue is rather than blindly swaping parts. It's most likely dpf but there's only one way to actually find out and that's with diagnostics. OBDeleven is always on some kind of offer so can be had sub £100

I thought the coil symbol was related to the glow plugs, do what @jayc001 says and get your van scanned to find out exactly what the issue is. I’d guess it’s totally unrelated to the conversion work you’ve had done

Should have said previously-2016, startline euro 6, T32, 150 bhp

Yes, they have checked glow plugs-fine

Error code suggested oil pressure switch-replaced but hasn't solved issue. They are currently doing an oil and filter change...I'm not hopeful.

Several people seem to have EGR clog ups after van standing for a while-would 2 months standing be enough to do this to a van that had been all over Europe recently?

Other folks have gone through having oil pressure valve replaced only to find it was a damaged wiring issue (I've read rodent damage and corrosion)...I wonder if wiring damage should be first port of call as there has been lots of conversion work occur and the light came on for the first time immediately on collection..

The converter have said that they had to jump the van to get it started and that's when the issue arose-they suggest a new battery will sort the issue-any thoughts on whether that's a reasonable proposal?

The conversion work might be coincidental to the glow plug light error.

The bit about them suggesting a new battery is interesting for me because my glow plug light has just begun flashing today and I do have a very dodgy battery which needs replacing. My van doesn't get much use so a low to flat battery is always an issue for me. I just gave it an hour long run up the motorway, stopped for some fuel and the light started flashing when I restarted it. I got home, turned the engine off, restarted it and the light had gone out. I'm sure that's temporary though. I'll check again tomorrow.

If a new battery might be the answers I'll be over the moon-but my battery starts the vehicle fine even when its been very cold overnight etc.

If it's a sensible step before replacing oil pressure valve I'll do it, but I guess the garage would have identified this if it was the cause...

Another symptom I have noticed since the flashing coil light is slight juddering in power steering at low speeds.

You mentioned that the convertor had to jump the van to get started. If the battery runs too flat it is often unable to fully recharge again. There'll still be enough to start the van so all seems normal, but its State of Charge will likely be compromised. As I know my battery is shot, despite still able to start the van, I was interested to know if our experiences with the light were indeed related to our batteries being damaged. Mine gets another long run tomorrow so I'll see how things go.

Hi

So they have done an oil pressure test and find that it’s flipping the engine management light at 3500. Suggested need step seems to be ‘remove sump check bearings and replace oil pressure valve’ …… I’m intrigued that the light stays off if you reset once the engine is warm regardless of revs-I have tested this in multiple occasions and motorway drives.

I’m worried that they are chasing the oil pressure issue when it might actually be dpf related. Would a dpf light definitely come up on the dash if this was the issue or might it show also through the flashing coil engine management light?

Garage have called to say the dropped the sump and ran a pressure test which suggests internal loss of oil pressure.

Suggest next step-reconditioned engine!? Feel like I have just been kicked in the nuts.

Can this be right? I feel like replacing he valve or oil pump would be next steps rather than a new engine? Having just put everything into a conversion this is the worst outcome. Obviously I need to get a second opinion but at this stage I'm not even sure if its safe to drive it to another garage.

Does anyone have any recommendation for a solid VW specialist in the Staffordshire area?

Midland VW in Norton Canes

Decided to get my van back and take somewhere else. Turns out, for no reason I could understand they had decided not to drop the sump and instead just tell me I needed a recon… here’s their notes in case it sheds any light. Taking it to a vw specialist tomorrow.

So based on that, can you believe anything else that they say they have done?
Glad you’re going to a different place tomorrow.
Fingers crossed.

I had Halfords do a battery health check and they said the battery is as purely fine on mine.
