"finishing" Around A New Window

Hi, I'd like to pick your brains, I'm wanting to make the rear of the van more sociable for passengers by fitting a nearside rear quarter window (not me personally!)
I've taken off the carpeted panel and found that the van is already carpeted underneath as well. I'm guessing that the normal finish would be to tuck the trimmed carpet under the rubber strip that finishes off the cut edge.
The carpet below the window area has not been stuck on very neatly (probably because the wood panel was going to cover it). I'm thinking of cutting the panel and refitting the bottom half. Have any of you got any advice or photos of your installations?

The normal finish is to tuck the carpet down between the window and the outside of the panel, so as not to need a rubber trim:

Im not sure if thats possible though if the carpet is already done.
