Hi there

Thinking of going to Switzerland next June. Can anyone suggest:

1. Best way to get over there - Ferry or tunnel. We live north east and thinking of doing Hull Rotterdam.
2. Any decent sites halfway for a stop over
3. Any tips for legal driving requirements
4. Any great places in Switzerland not to miss

Many thanks in advance.

Chad

Put Switzerland into Search and you’ll find plenty of info’.
3. Consult the Swiss government website prior to departure, nobody else's opinions are a guarantee of legality.
4. Not many bad places to visit but expect to queue in the summer, there may or may not be coach loads of Chinese tourists who aren’t fond of queuing.
Despite being summer the mountain weather conditions can change, my advice would be not to buy mountain passes in advance but to look at the weather forecast and buy them on the day in the Tourist Info’ Office, there is no saving in buying in advance.
It’s expensive, disregard the food and drink regulations and fill your van in France or wherever before entering Switzerland, nobody will check.

Depending on budget, look at a ferry from Dover.

I've looked at Newcastle and Hull ferries and they are very expensive in my opinion.

Very cheap ferry from Dieppe to Newhaven, possible to camp for free near the ferry port, see SearchForSites.

Even possible to overnight in the ferry port itself. 👍

I liked the tunnel to get to Europe. 35 mins.
Putting my Yorkshire head on, I just wanted to crack on and not spend money on needless cups of tea.

We're from the North East and Eurotunnel every time for us, there's a Premier Inn very near the tunnel which is a great stopover for an early morning train to get you started in France.
Warning triangle, hi Viz vest for everyone in your vehicle, 2 breathalyser test kits, spare bulb kit, first aid kit, UK sticker for rear of vehicle should get you started.
Really need a Critair sticker for France as well (Google it) depending where you're going.
Not sure on regs for Switzerland though, best to check that out
Wherever you go though the roads are WAY better and generally less busy than the UK !

The roads we used from Calais to Paris were the best I have ever used, for motorway anyway. Sitting at 80mph for a couple of hours without touching the cruise control because everyone was driving the same speed and not sitting in the middle lane for no reason. Great.
