eSIM Connectivity Issue, T6.1 Discover Media (Cubic Telecom)

Has anyone successfully got the eSIM and data package working on their T6.1? I can pair with my iPhone no problem. But I thought I’d have a go with the built in eSIM - without any luck. I registered and bought a 30 day data package with the provider Cubic Telecom but I can’t get it to connect. I’ve run through fault finding with Cubic Telecom and they are convinced that the eSIM isn’t trying access mobile networks (they can monitor this if you give them your geo location) and that the problem is with the vehicle. Interestingly the WeConnect data connection works so I’m not sure if VW have another method of data connection with the vehicle?

I don’t really need the eSIM data connection but it’s there so I’d like to see it working before the warranty expires. Its booked into the VW commercial dealership but I’m not confident they will work it out, they didn’t even know there was an eSIM !!

I just saw this while querying the same issue on my new MK8 Golf. The inbuilt eSim cannot stay connected to the network and often goes offline for days at a time. Many of the features in the new Golf are based upon online connectivity, and so my car is not "as advertised". I've been back to the dealer three times now, i honestly believe they have no idea how to resolve this.

Mine is booked in Monday so I'll let you know if they manage to resolve anything.

@aob9 - A little twist on my issues with the eSIM on my 6.1. As the van is going to the garage tomorrow I bought another 30 day package today from Cubic Telecom so they could test out the connection, and it worked !! for the first time I was able to view data packages that I'd bought and use the internet radio function via the eSIM. Cubic were blaming VW but nothing has changed on the van so it must have been at their end.

Well that's one off the warranty list for the garage tomorrow. I hope you get your golf sorted ok.

Interesting. The Golf is with the main dealer. They've admitted there is a connectivity issue but have to idea how to deal with it. Cae dealers aren't software and PC specialists. I see a lot of hassle down the road with this type of tech in cars

Is there any advantage to using the eSim over my mobile phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot? Looking at the prices of the data packages (and being in mind I will be carrying 3 data-hungry kids around in the back) it appears to be cheaper for me to get an unlimited data contract with my mobile phone provider rather than buying a data pack for the eSim.

I’m on a Voda unlimited, full speed sim only for my iPhone, it’s £25 a month and my kids rinse it to death on YouTube, Netflix etc but it all works flawlessly.

We used over 100Gb on a 9 day holiday between us all.

Apparently, there are issues with the VW head units connecting with Android 9 or later. My phone is running on Android 10 and won't work as a router to my Golf. Neither does App Connect work. It's a total disaster tbh, for a new car out of the box

Yeah, that's my concern about buying a data package through We Connect. As soon as the kids find out it will be gone! I am also with Vodafone so sounds like the way to go.

That's terrible. So much for German engineering!

The problem is IOS and Android are constantly being updated and often that breaks connectivity with other devices, in this case the oem headunit.

Also VW seem to have a habit of making flakey software, my Touareg headunit had some really annoying bugs too which never got patched.

I’ve ditched my Discovery headunit and gone aftermarket, it’s soooo much better in every single way.
