Engine won't turn OFF after flat battery....help :-)

Hi all, I recently took a week's holiday and returned to a flat battery, no big deal I thought, it's a 2016 T32 probably with the original battery, so a new one required. However, I jump started it and drove around for half an hour, got home stopped, removed the keys and engine was still running, tried everything I could think of, off, on, stop start etc - nothing - the engine was still running. Coil light on and start stop error, eventually with a combination of park, revving, removing and reinserting the keys etc, engine stopped or stalled. However, all headlights and dash lights still on even without the key. All I could do was disconnect the battery for now. But now I don't know if I have a serious electical fault or what.

Anyone ever seen similar behaviour?

Thanks

Joel

My first thoughts are an issue with the key barrel, if not then sounds like some kind of ignition relay is stuck on ?

See if it still thinks the ignition is on when you reconnect the battery
Could be a tricky one to diagnose as a fault scan may not show the issue, think i would get that battery fully charged before doing too much else as low battery voltage can cause havoc with the electrics

Thanks Pauly, battery on charge tonight, very strange (and a tad scary not being able to turn it off)

The flat battery & not switching off could be one & the same problem.

You need 12v power for a modern diesel to run.

But low batterys can cause all sorts of odd behaviours.

Just to report back guys, battery charged overnight, however, same problems today, van started, but can't turn it off, eventually trying to stall it (hard with a DSG) as even taking the battery connection off whilst it's running didn't work :-(. I guess I need an auto-electrician... Any recommendations in the Poole/Dorset area?

The alternator will keep supplying power and keep the engine running.

So disconnecting the battery won't help.

But there are a few fuses that could be removed to stop the engine?

..

Have you tried a bit of wd40 in the ign barrel and damn good jiggle.?

Hi guys, just to report back - it get's more bizarre..., so after a couple of days of the same symtoms and me trying to stall the van to stop it, the problem seemed to go away. Then, I started seeing the 'Oil Sensor Workshop' light flash on and off and then this morning at around 4am, the alarm went off, ignition back on (not engine), light on, window wipers and radio on (to the delight of my neihbours I am sure). So I went down and sure enough same thing, the van thinks it's on, key error message, coil light, start stop errors etc. Now the only thing I can think of is: it had been dry for a few days but last night we had rain. I wonder if water is getting in the electrics somewhere, but no idea where to start with that.

@Dellmassive, I will try the WD in the ignition, but I think it's a more serious problem :-(

Probably not, but your start point should either be a multimeter to test what's coming from the ignition switch, or an auto electrician.

The key barrel... Is normally a seperate part to the switch, so can me replaces indipendantly.

But, saying that I've not swapped one out yet so don't quote me.

We'll need to check the workshop manual and parts book to see what is available.

It won't be easy to remove as it's part of the security system on the van.... Possibly shear bolts?

@Loz @Pauly and info or a download in regards to the key barrel? / Ign switch replacement?

I’m not sure that’s the best direction, definitely a possibility but for me water ingress to the bcm is a possibility ??

I guess removing the steering column plastics and disconnecting the key barrel will prove it one way or the other

Thanks guys - a job for the weekend. I have it booked into an auto electricians on Tuesday, but have some bits to do this weekend anyway (blower resistor etc), so will have a look.
