Energy Usage Help - 60kwh per day!

No, we try to use them quite sparingly now since we noticed the bills getting out of hand. Mrs is always cold which doesnt help. Pretty much on from 5pm onwards but only in the Kitchen and Lounge, the others are turned off. Bedroom heater on for 2 hours in evening
We have an electric throw (bit like an electric blanket but thicker). I use it when working from home and everyone else out so don’t have the heating on.

We are on an economy 7 tariff and the controller is correct, switching it on-off between 12:30am and 6:30am
I don’t have Economy 7, but suspect the bill will be split showing the different tariffs? You should also then be able to see when you are using most electric which might help to narrow it down.

Also I don’t have an electric emersion heater but 6 hours sounds a long time of heating it.

[edit - just seen later in the thread you have the bill broken down]

Also I don’t have an electric emersion heater but 6 hours sounds a long time of heating it. Is it lagged?

I’m not sure your consumption is too unreasonable. In the three months mid Dec to mid March we used 3144kWh of gas (space and water heating) and 879kWh of electricity (everything else incl cooking), total 4023kWh which averages at 1341kWh per month. That’s for a well insulated modest sized modern 4 bed detached. I always expect older properties to need more heating. So it’s a question of identifying where your power is going to help you manage it.

Fortunately for us, we benefit from Solar hot water and PV, which although of minimal benefit in the winter but make us an exporter of power in the summer.

Another thought have you checked the smart meter readings on the bill against the actual meter readings main box. And when they switched over the old meter was read/recorded correctly.

What Paul says, check main meter readings, don't trust the smart meter. Ours hasn't been sending readings since 5th Feb and Octopus are putting ludicrous charges on our account.

I've started submitting monthly readings and reduced our DD to £1 a month for now until we claw back the extra we paid in over the winter.

Luckily you can do that (the DD) with Octopus.

Don’t know if you have sorted you extreme electric usage issue. But is your house a semi detached? Had a similar issue with a customer and it turned out next door was using the excess, no criminally got wired when it was a single dwelling before being split into two once more. Be well.

I’d check if the cylinder is heating more than once nightly, and watch panel heater timers; one stuck on can burn loads. A cheap plug-in monitor helps spot hidden drains.

I’d check whether the water cylinder is reheating in the day because a stuck thermostat or immersion switch can quietly burn through loads of units. Panel heaters on boost modes also love to run longer than you think, so a quick meter check while everything is off can be a nice reality check. I shaved a chunk off my own bill after switching via Octopus Energy Referral Code - Get £50 Credit - 2026 , so the tariff side is worth a peek too.

Chris, not sure if this suggestion has been raised, but if you have an detected water leak from a hot water pipe somewhere, your water heater will keep staying on as cold water goes into it.
We had this last year. Noticed the shower water was only like warm then 3 days later, fortunately heard a small hiss under the floorboards. Pinhole leak in the shower hot feed.
Just a thought....
