As somebody who was born in the 1960’s I can remember when there were very few cars in the rural areas but you could smell them 10 mins after they’d passed. Be careful what you wish for, we’d all be on oxygen masks if there wasn’t change.
Ill never preach or tell someone else what to do with their vehicle, but having unsuccessfully given CPR to a 13 year old girl who had a severe asthma attack brought on by traffic pollution I'd never do that myself.Oh, I was less concerned about what some bureaucrat thinks about my car and more the mechanical considerations.
No harm in trying but VW warranty doesn’t cover carbon fouling, plus they generously offered to relieve you of £250 for diagnostics. You must be doing some very short journeys to need an EGR replacement at 36K miles.Even with the VW extended warranty, FSH and only 36k miles, I don't believe VW would consider a contribution??
IMO these additives don’t help, they all need to be burnt therefore are hydrocarbon based and make soot. If you look at the active ingredients they are very low concentrations. If it makes you feel better carry on or perhaps put the £ towards an EGR fund. Thanks, mileage wise I normally do a 12 mile round trip weekly - everything else is minimum of 25 mile+ journey.
As I mentioned, EGR P0401 was first an issue in September 2020 @ 13k miles.
Van was previously a demonstrator for a VW dealer, so maybe its first 5k was spent “going around the block”?
I use BP/Shell/Esso fuel with Millers, but did put a bottle of Wynn’s Extreme Cleaner through last month, perhaps it dislodged something?
I got quoted £1175 at a local independent in Blackpool but then went to a different local garage literally round the corner & was quoted £180 for labour & £200 for a comparable one + VAT of course. Unfortunately the part didn’t fit & they had to get it from VW at £550 still under £900 which I was happy with. VW tried to flog the pipes as well or wouldn’t guarantee it for 2 years. WDreaded P0401 code has returned (albeit 6 years after VW flush).
Seems I might as well bite the bullet and get the EGR replaced. RevolutionVW near me are quoting £1,200 which seems fair.
I tried to get a quote from VW - I was told it would be £250 up front for a diagnostic, then they would decide how complicated the job would be and how much they would charge - don't think I'll bother.

I’ve just had mine done on a 204 bi-turbo CXEB, it’s the fancy watercooled one. Genuine VW kit including both EGR pipes £1300 fitted inc vat by my local Indy.I got quoted £1175 at a local independent in Blackpool but then went to a different local garage literally round the corner & was quoted £180 for labour & £200 for a comparable one + VAT of course. I didn’t bother & apparently they were fine. This was on about 54k & I’ve no idea how long or short its journeys were before I got it in May 2025. When I was still working it Got 6 10 mile journeys & some local stuff each week.
