So my new to me (2016) T6 blue motion t28 (2.0.. with 103 miles on the clock)just had a full service ( 4 days ago) and the EGR light has come on…( I have had it 4months and it’s been fine) it had and oil clean additive and new oil..( we didn’t know when it had had a full service only records of interim service so it had the full works) but now it stinks and smokes ( smoke stinks) no blue or white smoke just more than before exhaust smoke but sinks ( makes your eyes sting if you stand at the back) do I need to take it for a high rev drive?? Would an oil clean do this?? Or an oil filter change??? .. not sure what to do now.. any help would be appreciated….update just taken it for a run and he lights gone off..

Probably a bit late now, but such additives are to be avoided except in extreme circumstances.

Presumably the additive went in the old oil, it was driven a few dozen miles and then the oil was changed? Hopefully the garage haven't just dumped it in the new oil and left it there...

Check the oil level when the engine is cold, first thing in the morning is ideal. Van should be on level ground. An overfill would possibly explain the smoke. Ideally it should be halfway between the Min and Max marks on the dipstick, and under no circumstances above max.

It does now… I haven’t been able to drive it properly for the last 3 weeks as someone took out the wing mirror and we don’t have a rear view mirror ( it was a bulkhead van) and it’s illegal to drive it with only one wing mirror🤦🏼‍♀️ but gave it a good blast ( drove like I’d pinched it 🤣) and the light went off … now got the battery on charge …

A good ol' Italian tune up works wonders in many cases. I regularily kick the shit out of mine..... Did it with my 4motion Caddy over the last 10 years, serviced regularily, not had any bother at all. 👍

What do you call an 'Italian tune up'?
Is that driving at 3000rpm (on mine that is 70mph in 4th gear and get 42MPG), or do you push it higher?

My old T4 was happy with 3000rpm for half hour. It would clear the pipes quite nicely.

Yep …I drive it like I pinched it last night up the A16 and the light went off and was still off this morning

Drive it like you're racing. When its up to temperature, foot to the floor, use all the revs from 3rd gear upwards. Road conditions allowing. You want the turbo to do some work, create some heat.... Clear the pipes

Some people may disagree but I've done Italian tune ups for years. Like @JumpShip said, do it regularily.

I reckon - at a guess - in 3rd gear could get it to 60mph at about 4000rpm. Any higher gear @4000rpm and will be going way past speed limit.
4000rpm seems a little high though. Ah - will see if it is happy at 3500rpm.

Thanks everyone… the light has cleared after the “ Italian tune up” and it all seems back to normal … thanks again for the good advice 🫶🏻

Just a thought...

Its not universally appreciated that these engines have a 'wet belt' arrangement for the oil pump drive, ie, it operates within the engine and is exposed to the oil.

It might be useful precaution to ask the garage what additive they used and confirm that it is wet belt compatible.

If it is, you can rest easy.

If it isn't...
