EGR flush RESULT…….

For ref for others: Just had a flush done at Sinclair VW Cardiff Van centre. £330. Looks like a new pipe was fitted. £46+VAT.
New Egr £1000, so 3 flushes = cost of new Egr. I've just gone down the route of a new Egr as I wasn’t convinced that flushes were the way forward- hopefully you’ll get a few thousand miles before needing another

Hi All

2019 t6 Kombi -- generally shorter journeys over the last 2 years or so. regularly serviced by VW extended warranty ended June last year.

2 previous flushes
Just before the extended warranty ended engine light came on and had a mobile VW mechanic come out he did a minor service and said couldn't find a fault to fix with EML. Honestly I should have questioned this I suppose. Probably about 2 months after the light came back on and in November he said it was now an EGR issue and take it to main base Croydon for analysis. Postponed due to lack of cash now in at Croydon VW who say it needs a flush ( which would be 3rd one) at £455 - other option is replace EGR as no guarantee that the light won't pop up again shortly after.

Any advice - new EGR is quoted as £2114

Options
- flush and hope
- ask for goodwill as EML came on and was 'non-diagnostic' during warranty period and 2 previous flushes etc
- take it somewhere else
- Contact VW UK

That's expensive for an egr job?

It's a £600 part.

Have you called other garages or indy for a second price?

...

Don't bother with the flush, it's a temporary fix.... Just fit a new one.

But call around for a better price.

I would not advise the first option!

My van had an 'annual' Flush and Hope (since 2018!), then finally I threw my toys out of the pram last year when I found myself with a similar quote. I got a replacement EGR done under goodwill (covered by the dealer and VW UK). I could clearly demonstrate that the issue had been on the van since new (and I had been keeping logs of my journeys to show that it wasn't 'driver error'). Obviously this is no guarantee that you'll get the same, but there seems to be a 'known problem' out there and it could be argued that VW have been kicking the EGR 'can' down the road until warranties expire and then expecting the customer to pick up the cost... (if one were cynical)

You may need to politely hold your ground. It took a few months and a lot of 'communication' to achieve the outcome. Might have been less stressful to pay out... But we're on a better footing now and the van is about to go back for a service...

Thanks I thought it was very steep - SMG Croydon - as an update I have complained to VW customer care on the basis that this was already an issue in the extended warranty period and that VW should be giving me a new EGR as goodwill. It has literally been serviced as per VW at SMG annually and is low mileage. Will see how I get on !

I went through the same process with Croydon, they said it was down to the warranty people who I spoke to and got nowhere with them so gave up and had it replaced at VANTEC in Uckfield, speak to Steve there, great garage and much cheaper than Croydon

Just checked, I paid around £850 plus vat
