Drill recommendations

I have a 2.5Ah battery - anything bigger is unwieldy IMO.
I agree - keeping the battery light helps a lot. The 2.5ah seems another good one.

Bosch have a flash sale on a limited line of the green 18v tools. Link Here. Useful if you want to expand your range of tools that use your existing battery.

I use the little AdvancedImpactDive 18 which is £78.32 in the sale and good for 130Nm - plenty for the ground pegs in rock I would think. This uses the hex bits and you can get sockets that suit. I’ve driven 250mm long 8mm diameter timber screws into fresh timber with no pilot holes using it.

If you want to be able to also use the tool for your wheel bolts (180Nm I think?) consider the UniversalImpactDrive 18v350 which uses the 1/2 inch drive sockets and has three torque settings up to 350Nm.

It may be that other dealers have lower prices anyway?

Yeah, a Bosch 'flash sale' email is what prompted me to start this thread.

I was looking at the UniversalImpactDrive 18V-210, which isn't in the Bosch sale (typical 🙄), though I did find it cheaper elsewhere anyway, but if the AdvancedImpactDive 18 is up to the job, then I might go in that direction.

Cheers for the info.

If I had any pegs like yours I’d happily go and test them in the back alley.

I’d probably hit a water pipe but it would be in the name of science.

I just haven’t got any very large screws to hand at the minute. 7.5 x 120mm is the largest and I know it manages those, at least in wood, no trouble at all.

I also found drill bits with the hex shank do tend to use this for drilling my purposes too now as it’s a lot shorter than my cordless drill so can fit in tighter spaces.

I picked up one of these for a job we did last summer installing roughly 2000 150mm coach screws through 3-4" timber. Absolutely beasted it! Its a monster! Haha Its now retired into my garage for wheel nut duties.

A bit out of my budget. ;)

I have some of these pegs (bought after seeing someone successfully screw in their awning) and I find that the head is fine (with the correct bit) but the thread and the tip of the peg don’t bite sufficiently and blunt against the first real object encountered. I was using a standard drill not an impact driver but I don’t think that’s really the issue. If you have the average sized hardstanding rock in the way it won’t go through so it has to go round and to do that you need to bash it with a sizeable hammer

Just my pennys worth.
I hate impact drivers. Too noisy and not needed these days. I use Festool tools and have 2 Quadrives TDC’s. 18v and outperforms all my mates impact guns. Best part they are quiet just like other normal drills.
If you was using an impact drill on a camp site you might be moaned at by other campers. I don’t camp so don’t know what the noise levels are like on site.

If you're on a site that is going to moan at you for spanking 10 pegs in. It's not a site I'd want to stay at.

I have WORKPRO Cordless Impact Drill Kit, 1/4” Hex Electric Impact Drill Set with 12V 2.0Ah Lithium-ion Battery, 1 Hour Fast Charge, Variable Speed, 14pc Driver Bits and Tool Bag (UK 3-pin Plug) : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools and 20x Tent Pegs with Thread & Rope Holder, Robust Steel Pegs with Mallet, Magnetic Bolt Head Adaptor and Bag for Camping and Outdoors Hard Stony Ground : Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors work great together.
