Has anyone got a Discovery Media headunit they'd like to sell? Preferably with component protection removed and CarPlay/Android Auto activated.

Iv just removed mine last weekend from van weekend has apple play via usb plugin but i left a dongle in glovebox for wireless, not sure on the protection though guessing would need plugging into vagcom or similar ?

If that the one your after ? Was going look at listing it for sale, top right of the digitizer when X in corner wouldnt respond been like it since had van read they can be replaced though other than that rest worked fine

Not sure if you are still looking have a genuine VW touchscreen unit from my 2024 t6.1 was taken out after a week of owning.. it had CarPlay running on it but assume this is from the unit and not from other parts within the van? I was put off putting up for sale as everyone was saying they all need coding to a new van

Screen is fully working yes - I notice sometimes and infrequently I have to push the odd screen button once or twice - what do you mean by component protection?

Headunits are electronically coded to the vehicle VIN they are installed in at the factory. This is called component protection. It's an anti theft device like the old radio codes that means you can't just swap a unit from one VIN to another without paying to get them unlocked. If your device has component protection enabled it won't work in someone else's van.

I'll be honest, I have no idea. I don't know what an unlocked unit needs or does. When it's connected to what? (Someone else's van) What can you access?. I only know that you can't straight swap a unit from one VIN to another. @Dav-Tec any help pls?

Hi everyone. Thanks for the replies.

Component protection simply means that’s the unit is locked to one van. You can get it removed but there’s a cost involved in that. The place I was talking too would replace the screen (if it hadn’t already been done) and remove component protection for £140.

The thing that has been putting me off is that Discover media units cost the same as a brand new aftermarket unit once this has been done and I know that a decent Kenwood head unit for example would sound a lot better than a VW one. It’s a good job I’m so decisive!
