Hello all..

Its deer season where I live and a bunch of them jumped in front of the van yesterday afternoon whilst driving down a country lane. Luckily I was only going about 30/40 and hit the brakes as soon as I saw the first one ahead as they came in groups.. Luckily the deer I hit bounced off the front and got up and legged it with his mates.. The vans fan then went straight to max speed and I pulled over to check the damage.. amazingly nothing panel / lights wise was damaged.. VW road assist sent out the AA who found that the outside temp sensor had been snapped off.. The radar box ACC had been used back and had pocked a dent in the intercooler. So I'm waiting for the approved garage to get it in for an insurance quote.. I presume that this is not cheap and requires the insurance route ? any ideas on how much? big job? Need the van of course for work! many thanks All

Is the Intercooler punctured, i.e. does it still hold air? If it's still functioning correctly I'd just leave it as is and fix the rest myself.

As @DaveD says. Otherwise by the time you pay the excess and next few years increased premium you maybe worse off. However if you have already reported the accident to the insurance company they will add to the premium regardless of what you decide to do.

I suspect the radar will also need to be recalibrated. I don't know the exact number but when I had an accident in my van about 15 months ago, I was told by the body shop that they had to get somebody in to do it and it was over £200 for that job alone.

Radar wasn’t much cop on spotting that deer, who the f*** needs a radar to drive a car?!
Pull it off and stick it on Ebay to recoup some of the costs would be my solution.

Not sure if you are being entirely serious, but for those who might think you are, I can’t see that removing the radar would be a viable solution as doing so will disable two safety features - City braking and brake assist. So you would then need further changes to ”hide” that fact at MOT time, and even then would run the risk of invalidating your insurance should you be involved in an accident With safety features disabled.

I don’t see anything in the MOT Manual regarding testing of city braking and brake assist.
As far as insurance goes I’ve never been asked by a broker or insurance company if I have the systems installed.

It will be baked-in to the insurance group assigned to the vehicle though and the insurer will know/could easily find out whether your model has (should have) those safety features.

For the MOT, I would expect there to be a warning illuminated that those facilities were not available. I agree, there is probably nothing in the MOT to test the related functionality, but any warning light is an instant fail (so I’ve been told re. our Yaris and the winter wheels that do not have pressure sensors in them - which means there is a warning on the dash).
As for insurance, they will happily take your money but if you are involved in an accident, say you tail end someone, then a quick check of your van with VCDS or similar will reveal those safety systems not working and then it is goodbye any cover. Insurance companies do not need much of an excuse to refuse a claim.

Radar reacts to the moving objects in the same direction only as the vehicle equipped with that radar.
Obviously the object has to be big enough to be recognised as a vehicle(motorcycle with a rider on it is big enough).

P.S.
No need to put it on Ebay, I will buy it.
