Decisions...

Yeah true and pros to both, to be honest maybe more on barn doors - things don't fall out, don't need 6ft clearance.. and I don't get this whole thing of 'somewhere for shelter if it's raining'... I'm not wild camping, and if it's raining I'm inside! And ok, the rain shower or shower attachment thing is cool... But again, I'm not planning on doing that!
The tailgate is suspect for use aa a rain shelter. Do it often enough and water gets into the tailgate via the registration lamps and causes problems.

Yeah and apparently water runs down the back and into the hinge gap anyway... If anything, apart from looks and perhaps resale I don't know of any benefits... And even then, it's swappable

Being electric opening.....and closing at the touch of a button.

No...and i made the mistake of buying a tailgate without electric. My other van was fully electric and I loved it. This one is a pain.

Im sure you're right, but way beyond my knowledge....if anyone wants to do it for me then let me know. Please.....

I walk with a stick so generally only have one hand free and have zero issues manually opening the tailgate. Knowing VW's wondrous (lack of) build quality as I do im actually quite glad its manual.

I have a tailgate and was on my list of wants, but barn doors wouldn’t have been a deal breaker on the right van.

One thing I don’t like is the look of the hinges though. Much cleaner without those, but is minor in the grand scheme.

I am torn really, basically on this 'Personal Export Scheme' i can buy the van VAT free, it means i have to be out of the country 6 months. Therefore, i could buy this grey one for 23k:

I went to look at this one yesterday, all the way from Germany to Grimsby! Really nice guys and it would a great deal. Negatives for me are the lack of tailgate, and ideally DSG... ideally. But then the price goes right up. They have a black one, with 22k miles and DSG which i could get for around 28k - but its Black as discussed....

The rush is because my sisters wedding is in April, so i have to complete this purchase by Oct 17th. Or, i wait until after the wedding, then buy one - but then i have lost out on 6 months of VAT free upgrades over here (i can buy things VAT free in Germany too) and because i am due to come back in Novermber 2026 - I am once again right up against that 6 month restriction.

My thoughts are, if i can't find a Grey DSG Tailgate one now for a decent price (because they are sought after and thus demand a premium), the same is going to be the case next year - so i am going to have to compromise somewhere....

Legend - that white one looks good, the guy just phoned me back, still available and can do the VAT scheme for me... Slightly higher mileage than I would have liked though, but it's a compromise!

Just give it a proper going over. Carpet lining is bodged diy job, rear bumper looks badly scuffed and front seats got a rip.

Hmm, not easy to do from Germany - why you think it's a bodge job?

Hmm yeah, he said they put the windows on, wheels, roof bars, carpet... I mean to be fair, the wheels are worth quite a bit, the carpet I would have to redo anyway around a poptop and to get behind for sound deadening. The front seat I could replace the fabric, or since it's a double seat I'd replace both with Golf GTI seats anyway.... Even without those cosmetic issues it looks good...?

And no I flew in for one day to look at that van in Grimsby 😅
