We are planning a 3 week trip this summer to Germany, Switzerland and Austria (at least). Fancy seeing some mountain pass etc and tbh I’d really like to get down to the coast somewhere. The wife wants to stay at least 2 nights at most stops so working out route, sites etc along the way. More to come. Any advice gratefully received.

It’s going to be mid July to early August so high season but hopefully we can get away from the crowds!

What route are you taking from the island to the mainland?!! Your starting point in mainland Europe is a consideration as the route could be FR, CH, A and DE

Ok, not much progress yet but we have now booked the crossing. So looking to book the first stop somewhere on the way southeast from the tunnel towards the south of Germany. Looks like we will have about 4 hours travel time in Europe in the first day.

Any suggestions for places to stop? We are looking for a one night stay just off a main road south in or heading towards Germany

We have selected some places of interest to map a rough route, basically heading down the “romantic road” onto the German alpine route then crossing into Austria and heading back west into Switzerland and then back north through Black Forest.

Currently have far too many pins for the 3 weeks we have so need to decide which takes priority. Or maybe wing it as we go

So we have been trying to focus on this as it’s rapidly approaching but I keep getting sidetracked on where we can go on the next weekend!

We have chosen this place for the second night at the northern end of the “romantic road”

We then plan to Bosch the road in a day and get down onto the German alpine road and have booked this place next the next few nights

Technically Austria but close to the cable car up to Zugspitze from the AT. Also hope to do the big castles in Germany from here (if we can handle the tourists)

We then plan to travel east on the German alpine road to the Königssee area. Here we are having trouble booking anywhere so may end up in the motorhome parking for a night.

From there we plan to head south and get into the southern end of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road (looks good/scary/expensive!)

Then head east through the Tyrol valley passing here:

And then staying here:

Continuing further east the next stop at a planned here:

We should get a chance to do some hiking from there before heading further east on some more dramatic roads and into CH

Looks like a fantastic trip. Somewhere we've not really explored so looking forward to some posts in "where have you been in your van" when you go.

In fact, looking back, we drove from Lake Como over the Stelvio Pass to Fussen and Castle Neuschwanstein then up to Rudesheim am Rhein about 15 years ago before we had the van.
I love Rudesheim (I'd been there before) and the drive up the Rhein was stunning.
You've got me started now planning a road trip for September.

We never camped in the Germanic country’s before or holidayed there in any capacity so it’s all a little scary at the moment. Also committed to long drives as we are trying to do a lot in one hit so hopefully it will work at and it won’t be like a cannonball run the whole way!

Last few stops now planned ready for departure on Saturday
5 nights here:

A overnight here (as never been there before):

A stop here:

Then 5 nights here:

Final stop on the way home left to book but looking at here:

I haven’t got any motorway toll stickers or commissions zones stickers as intend to stay off motorways and out of cities. Hopefully that decision won’t come back and bite me!

Also got a duvalay mattress to use, now rolled away with bed made ready to go (used to put all bedding away in wardrobe but now filling that with clothes in packing cubes

@cgtmiles It's worth having the Crit Air in case of diversions etc, and registering the van with the Belgian cities that have low emissions zones as that is free. But I agree, never used a motorway or bought a motorway pass. I prefer the countryside route taken at a leisurely pace.

We have a French crit air sticker. Last time we drove to Switzerland on holiday we said the same thing but failed instantly as we crossed the border on the motorway and so had to buy a sticker there and then, then drove straight off the motorway, most expensive toll ever!

IMG_6230.webpFirst stop, camping Ettelbrock, choice of pitches which always causes us issues. Ended up on this one but after setting up realised we were miles away from the power. Luckily the nice German guy in the MH behind let me jump of his supply. Gave him a British beer as a thank you
