Clutch pedal sticking

Hi all, I’ve been driving the van for a few hours today and the clutch pedal started sticking and not returning, after stopping at some services I got a flashing glow plug light and a loss of power. Once I turned the van off and back on, the clutch pedal went back to normal and the power returned.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? I initially thought it was going to be the clutch cylinder but the off & on bit and lack of clutch slip has me stumped. Its a T6, 150bhp 6speed, 2017 plate on about 150k miles.

Thanks

Did you pull the pedal back up by hand? Sounds like the master cylinder on the pedal.

Have you checked your fluid ?
My guess would be slave cylinder .
Yeah i had been flicking it back up with my foot, fluid levels ok if i checked the brake reservoir as its ran off the same isnt it?

I did think it was the master cylinder but the turning it off and on along with not getting clutch slip made me question it!

If no leaks, then probably the master cylinder. There is a chance the slave cylinder is starting to leak and will cause your sticking pedal. With you having a 6 speed box, the slave is integral to to the gearbox so early leakage take longer to detect.

Pop your head under the van and see if there are any signs of dampness between the engine and gearbox

My Tiguan did the same, perfect and then the pedal started started to hang until pulled up by my foot. As the brake fluid age was unknown, I had the fluid renewed (should be done every 2 years anyway) and the issue was resolved. Not an uncommon problem across VW but my guess is water and dirty fluid will eventually kill the slave cylinder.

Sounds pretty unanimous that its the clutch cylinder! Was really hoping it wasn't. Will get it booked in and sorted.

Thanks all

Hi is there any further thoughts on this? So my clutch started sticking but only after long motorway stint with no clutch use. Then go to use it , ie pulling off junction and it stuck. Multiple times on a journey over Xmas. No leaks can be found at all. Garage said best to eliminate cheapest option first, ie master cyclinder, then move onto to slave and just as well do clutch when they in gearbox. Makes sense due to labour in involved. Issue is master cyclinder is out of stock , we’re now at week 5! This has screwed up holidays plans.
Wondering if it could be anything else. My garage hasn’t changed clutch / brake fluid in years. Always states no need it’s fine. But could that simply be too old? But colour and level is good

Any help appreciated .

Thanks.

I did the master cylinder and clutch in the gearbox and its been fine since then. Mine was similar to yours! Where are your garage souring parts from?

Thanks , helpful, They Have a supplier who sources VW parts , but at time it happened my guy closed for Xmas and another large local dealer had it, said the same. So I took van back and waited for my usual guy. but I just also spoke to VW parts directly who confirm yep, master out of stock and still on back order. That’s 5 weeks now!

@Pinnelli why not fit an aftermarket master cylinder?? VW are notorious for master cylinder issues, so I'd be getting another brand and get yourself back on the road
