Can T6.1 do short journeys / low miles and be happy ?

haven't seen a single petrol transporter for sale.
There's a dozen or so on Autotrader right now...

Obviously they might not meet your exact spec and they won't be brand new as the TSI was dropped earlier than the rest of the engines (just before the T6.1 was launched from memory)

I chose a TSI 6 years back as I have a similar driving profile - 2.5 miles each way to work and under 8k a year. Only problem I’ve had is the MPG, which I knew about beforehand. Around town 25 ish, managed 32 in a run from Devon to the Lake District this week so not horrendous. I may be selling soon though…

My apologies if thread resurrection is frowned on here.......

An informative, and rather disappointing, thread. We are (were?) considering a T6.1 based camper, but our non-holiday usage patterns would seem to rule this out - low mileage mainly short runs. I guess we could keep the run-about for the local stuff, but that would mean the T6 sitting idle a lot of the time. We had a non-dpf T5 before so this wasn't an issue. I would love to drive/camp round the hebrides and scottish west coast, but this sort of excursion would be an anomaly.

I guess I need to get a better feel for what 'short trip' means in this context - probably hard to quantify. I could see us doing weekly drives onto the moors for nights away, but this would generally be below 50 mph. I wouldn't mind doing a half-hour faster drive once a week for the sake of, but this might not coincide with the DPF cycling. Can the DPF cycle be force like this to ensure it happens at speed?

I really need to figure this out before splashing any cash, so thanks for any extra thoughts you have.

Unfortunately modern diesel engines don’t like lots of short journeys. Maybe try and find a tsi or if you’ve got really deep pockets a multivan hybrid based caravelle.

I hear you - but my pockets are not that deep!. There are many diesel cars out there - do they all suffer the same?

Generally, yes, yet muppets still bought them, drive them half a mile to drop the kids off at school and wondered whynthe motors threw a wobbly.

In my experience the van needs about 20-30mins driving to get warm enough before it starts a regen then 10mins or so to complete it. One issue is turning the van off mid regen as it will try again sooner than the 20-30mins on the next drive. This will take a while to complete as it’s not warm enough so on a short journey it will get interrupted again, and on, and on…. Each time it’s burning excess fuel which reportedly can get dumped into the oil causing oil overfill issues. It also causes more soot which further clogs things up.

In reality they need regular 30-40min runs to get a proper regen complete and these need to be every 150mils ish to coincide with when a regen is needed. Sod’s Law says it will start a regen just as you arrive at your destination! These drives do not need to be high speed but keeping the revs at a constant 2000-2500rpm is key.

Personally I’ve kept my runabout and never use the van for running around town / short journeys if at all possible. I take it to work and back (30 miles each way) once a fortnight to give it a run if I’ve not used it for a while.

A bit like me. Local journeys I walk or cycle.

My van doesn't do huge mileage and can sit idle for weeks (connected to a battery maintainer) but when it does get driven its for proper journeys of a decent duration. It never gets used for short journeys.
