Bosch ECU remap - finally?

That must be another fantastic freedom feature of thr UK system.
Respect.
Sadly ECUs are becoming increasingly tamper resistant as too may people have been taking the piss, so those seeking legal tuning are finding it harder as time goes by. Because the great British public cant be trusted to behave I can foresee we'll one day end up like France where all engine mods are banned.

These Bosch 6.1 ECUs are a symptom of this and are physically difficult to access, and (at the present time) jmpossible to crack with software, having to go abroad to a firm that physically installs a different 'open' EPROM on the board.

The MOT diesel smoke test is very basic and can't itself detect an absent DPF. The test pre-dates the introduction of DPF technology.

However, the DVSA has had selected MOT stations trialling a "PN" test, which can detect missing DPF's. The trial isn't part of the official MOT but is being used to gather data in order to establish how wide a problem sneaky deletes has become. Sadly, the data going back is sufficiently alarming that the DVSA want to incorporate the PN test into the MOT, as most of Western Europe has already done.

The only thing holding it up is arguments between industry bodies and the DVSA because of the cost of the gear, with the industry wanting more time for garages to acquire the gear in a phased manner. As of last year the DVSA wanted a 2028 introduction, but its probably now too late for that short a time frame so extremely unlikely. 2030 seems more feasible. When it happens, and it will almost certainly come within 5 years (I've a friend who's a bobby attached to DVSA who gets the internal gossip - DVSA are being leaned on heavily by central government due to legally binding air quality targets), there are going to be probably millions of people finding themselves lumbered with vehicles subject to prohibition notices that cant be driven until repaired, and worthless because no one is going to buy one without a ticket.
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
Very informative.
So what I gather is that WHEN the UK will implement a proper testing system ( I mean proper as that can check about what the rules are) the Diesel will be already extinct , at least as a private vehicle engine.

Possibly. Certainly hundreds of thousands will be permanently off the road in the first year. A vehicle with a prohibition notice cant be driven or sold, so the only alternatives will be reinstate everything and repair them properly, which seems unlikely as if folk could afford that they would not be resorting to such japes in the first place. So most will get scrapped instead.

The good news is that for the short to medium term there will be a glut of used parts on the market as these vehicles are broken, so those with legal vehicles will have an easier and less expensive time...for a while...in some a weird way it may actually prolong the lives of the legal fehicles for a period.

New diesel private vehicles are virtually extinct now anyway, although used prices remain very buoyant.

But ultimately the sunset is now visible on the horizon.

You're right. I tried since 2022 to get a new Diesel car and it was very difficult here in AT. It is a pity because with my driving pattern a Diesel (or perhaps a Hybrid Diesel) is perhaps still the most CO2 efficient vehicle. That is the reason that, as many, I bought an used Diesel. BTW integralist policies here consider Hybrids like normal ICE tax-wise. Newer ICE are also taxed more than old ones. So many people are either keeping their old (polluting) stuff or importing the same old stuff from bigger markets (Germany).

Their vid states theyre sending the ECUs away to be sorted on the bench, its not a plug and and tune solution.
