I never let my tank get below half, it’s something I have always done. So this time in,et it get down to a quarter of a tank and filled it up with the premium diesel something I have never done. I was thinking my van is low mileage not been used much before I bought it so will treat it and hopefully it’s good for it. £103 later. I don’t plan on doing it all the time but maybe every three months or so.
Does anyone else do this.

I’ve started using ‘non-supermarket’ diesel since getting the van and have used a couple of bottles of additives too just…well….cos….but I’m off on holiday to Holland and Belgium a week on Sunday and for some reason I feel the need to use premium diesel, certainly for one tank. No idea why, but I’m tempted to give it a try while the van is having a really good run out.

It matters little as there are only 3 ultimate sources of road fuel in the UK. The same areas are fed by the nearest source regardless of the sticker its sold under. For instance, MFG supply Morrisons, BP, Shell, Esso, Texaco. JET, Murco...

The biggest determining factor is the quality of the storage and the diligence with which the tanks are maintained. A busy garage where the tanks are drained and refilled speedily is a much better net than a less busy forecourt.

Thats interesting @Sasquatch I didnt know that. I always choose Shell or Esso. But if forced to go supermarket I tend to go with the super stuff. So whats all the stuff about Shell spending squillions on the development of their fuels and being refined etc etc.

Im sad enough to fall for the hype and only ever put the good stuff in.
It's turned into superstition for me now... Muppet...

From what I can gather all the fuel is pretty much the same it’s just the different additives that companys put in them. Like supermarkets don’t put any in so sell cheap fuel but then the big boys, Esso, BP etc add things in so you pay more.
You pays your money and you make your choice. 👍
I had my motorhome for twelve years and put whatever fuel was available and cheapest mostly super markets and used fuel stations in France, Spain, Portugal when we were wintering away. 3ltr 190bhp ran s sweet as a nut every time. 👍

Only ever Esso fill up pretty much every week every other tank is premium so 1 on 1 off.
Might be in my head but feels better on the premium but weirdly feels like I get less MPG

As I understand it you won’t see any difference in performance with‘premium’ diesel- it just has more cleaning additives/ detergents in it. Diesel is not like petrol where you can raise the octane for better performance.

Yes not better performance as such just feels more smooth and more responsive. Like I said probs all in my head 🤣

Would you wash your laundry at 90 deg C if 40 deg got it clean?
It’s the wonder of marketing and advertising.
Instant coffee that gets you into the neighbours bed, anti-perspirant that make you irresistible……….
If you have money to waste carry on.

A higher octane than that which the engine was designed to sup won't bring better performance on a petrol motor, although a lower octane may limit or reduce performance.

Keep feeding Shell and BP, it’s not a total loss as many UK pension funds heavily rely on them so there’s a few percent return.
