Bedding in new brakes

Ok, after fitting some new (rear) brake disks and pads to my brothers A1 I am sitting having a brew and browsing the forum, when it crossed my mind about betting in the brakes. If I’m honest all I have done with any vehicle (4 wheels or 2) after it has had new disks/pads is to avoid braking hard for the first few miles.

I know the recommended way to bed in brakes is, on a quiet road accelerate to 30-40mph, brake gently without coming to a stop then speed up again to 30-40, rinse and repeat a few times. Then let the brakes cool down.

However how the hell do I get to such a quiet road without using the damn brakes.

It's hard to find a good road for burnishing. Maybe a really big roundabout? It's not a pleasant job either.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the technicalities just be aware that your stopping power is drastically reduced and keep your distance, more so with front brakes.
Highly inadvisable to replace front and rear at the same time or to replace anything straight before a MOT.

Fronts are good. Rears were a long way from good. F9B2ADDD-7453-42FE-B337-19BE3FA46341.webp

TBH i have never really considered bedding in pads on a road vehicle, i will always do a few gradual brakes from speed just to make sure they work ok keeping in mind braking capacity is reduced and thats about it

On my track car though thats a while different story, i always aim to be in last place on the sighting lap and follow the recommendations for braking at slowly increasing speeds followed by a nice cool down period !

Does it really make much difference on a road vehicle ??
I genuinly dont kniw and am interested, @Nutexa Frictions whats your input on this ??

I remember being Oulton Park. Saw Niall McKenzie Unloading a brand new BMW S1000RR off a truck and it had obviously never turned a well. Next session out on track I dont believe he ever bedded in either the brakes or tyres. (He came past me into Old Hall Corner looking like he wasn't even trying :( ).

Does anyone consider bedding in brakes when they pick up their brand new car or van?

Yes. Drive normally, but be prepared for them being a bit weak.
Yes, but no specific, deliberate sequence of applications.

Out of interest, when you used to jump in a plod car, would you be told if it had just come out of the workshop with new brakes?

The only time I indulge in a bit of brake pedal dabage, is when I’ve just cleaned my car. But I’m talking carbon ceramics. They feel very wooden when wet/contaminated.
